The film’s writer-director Ruben Östlund is a Swedish filmmaker who has received critical acclaim (and accolades) for every film he’s made. What is “Triangle of Sadness” about?

The French title for this film, Without filter, translated means “Without Filter”, which might shed some light on what’s going on here. Yaya (Dean) and Carl (Dickinson), a celebrity model couple, are invited along with a Russian oligarch, an arms dealer and other Bezosian characters on a luxury cruise for the ultra-rich. Just as the wealthiest among us settle into their enormous superyacht, relax in the Greek sun, and call the staff together every three seconds, a storm rolls in, raining down on the parades of the One Percent, and from there chaos descends.

The film is a satire on wealth, class and privilege. As for the title, the triangle in question is actually a reference to the plastic surgery term used to describe the crease that forms between the brows (often fixed with a spritz or two of Botox). The entire film is a gutting of classicism and “appearing as capital” from top to bottom.

After the success of The White Lotusboth critically and in the zeitgeist, it’s clear that audiences are hungry for more, and not just looking to “eat the rich,” but to devour them.
