Renewal of the rivalry
At launch, the Exter SUV will meet Tata Punch. In addition, it will also challenge competitors such as Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Citroen C3, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
Hyundai Exter safety features
The Hyundai Exter will be equipped with numerous safety features. It will be the country’s first sub-four-meter SUV to be equipped with six airbags, including driver, front passenger, curtain and side airbags. There will be 26 safety functions in total, including ESC (Electronic Stability Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) and HAC (Hill Assist Control).
Did you know?
The Hyundai Exter boasts the longest wheelbase in its segment – 2,450mm – and is also the tallest in its segment at 1,631mm.
Scope and Scope
Tata Punch currently has an almost open playing field in the subcompact crossover SUV segment, selling an average of around 10,000 units each month. The company has sold over two million units of the model since its initial launch in October 2021.
This may have prompted Hyundai to explore the segment and secure a permanent place here.
The SUV segment under ₹10 lakh
With SUVs of all shapes and sizes, the definition of “SUVs” is constantly evolving. Vehicles like the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Fronx are also considered SUVs, and it’s in this space that Hyundai Exter will try to make a name for itself.
Hyundai Exter SUV with numerous functions
The Hyundai Exter SUV could be the Korean automaker’s smallest. However, Hyundai has equipped the Exter with numerous functions. Some of the most outstanding features that will be available in the Exter include a 4.2-inch digital display in the instrument cluster, an 8-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, a dash cam with front and rear cameras that can also take selfies, smartphone App-based connectivity features and intelligent electric sunroof with voice control.
Hyundai Exter bookings and expected price
Hyundai Motor has already opened bookings for the Exter SUV. You can book the Exter through Hyundai dealers or through an online portal. The booking amount for Exter SUV is ₹11,000. Hyundai Motor will launch the Exter SUV as a sub-10 lakh model. The carmaker is expected to maintain the price range in between ₹6 lakhs and ₹10 lakh (former showroom) to compete with the likes of Punch and Fronx. At this price, the Exter will be the cheapest Hyundai SUV in India.
Why Hyundai needs an exterior in the SUV segment
Hyundai Motor has long been a dominant player in the SUV segment in India. With models like the Creta, Tucson, Venue or Alcazar, the Korean carmaker had almost every SUV segment under control until the competition started to bring smaller SUVs onto the market at a lower price. While the Creta has proven itself among new competitors, the other Hyundai SUVs have not been able to match similar achievements. Now that the SUV share is slipping with the launch of new models, the Korean automaker doesn’t want to leave any segment empty. Exter is positioned below the Venue and is aimed specifically at the Tata Punch or Maruti Suzuki Fronx in the lower-priced small SUV segment. It could also target companies like Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
