Discussion points and analysis on Day 1 between India and Australia

Is the writing on the wall for David Warner?

It’s hard to admit, but the writing could be on the wall for David Warner in the Test arena.

After scoring a dismal double century against the Proteas in the Boxing Day Test, there was optimism the left-hander had turned around his meager form.

But in the opening two games against India, the 36-year-old struggled in the tough conditions, falling to a low total again in Delhi.

After being dismissed for 1 and 10 in the series opener, Warner found it difficult to get going on day one of the desperately needed win of the second Test before being nicked by Mohammed Shami for just 15 runs.

While his opening partner Usman Khawaja played aggressive cricket, Warner took his time getting away from the start and never looked comfortable on the tricky wicket.

With a massive Ashes streak on the horizon in conditions Warner has previously struggled in, now may be time for the veteran to walk away before a pat on the back.

Kuhnemann debuts, Head returns in Australia

Australia’s controversial decision to drop Travis Head from the line-up has already been reversed, with the left-hander returning to the side for the second Test in Delhi.

In a move that shocked many in the Australian cricket community, Head was sidelined at Nagpur but will be back on deck this time in place of Peter Handscomb.

The other big move is the debut of left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, who will replace Scott Boland, leaving the visitors with just one closer in the starting XI for the must-win clash.

The 26-year-old was a standout in state cricket, beating Ashton Agar for the role of Australia’s third spinner for the second Test.

Australia won the draw and will bat first on Friday.
