In a world of endless remakes, reboots, and spin-offs, it’s hard to get excited about something you think you’ve already seen. I mean why mess around with a good thing right? Sometimes just bringing back old characters and banging on nostalgia feels like a cash heist.
Interview with the vampire— the 1994 film based on the famous 1976 novel of the same name — had a standout cast in Christian Slater, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. He received two Oscar nominations and gave Dunst’s career a boost. While the film’s sequel fared poorly, the original is considered a commercial and critical success. And yet there is now not just a new attempt Interview with a vampirebut it’s slightly different in its approach (in a good way).
The contemporary remake changes the character of Louis de Pointe du Lac. Originally a plantation owner, Louis (played by game of Thrones“Jacob Anderson) is now a black man who made his living owning brothels. And while the 1994 film has little overt queerness, the new TV show makes it clear that Louis and Lestat (Sam Reid) are in a romantic relationship. Through these critical changes, the show becomes a meditation on race, sexuality and class in a way the 1994 film was not. And if the critics Rotten tomatoes Score means everything (the show is at 98%), the new Interview with a vampire is a complete success. Also, you don’t have to watch the 1994 film beforehand; it’s a whole new version of Anne Rice’s work.
