A technician has added a USB-C connector to an iPhone 12 mini in addition to the Lightning connector, in what appears to be a first modification of its kind.

YouTube user ‘Hyphaistos3672’ disassembled the ‘iPhone 12 mini’, removing the speaker and making room for an additional port before mating the new USB-C port to the existing hardware. After the speaker has been modified to fit the reduced interior space and the unit has been reassembled, the resulting fit and finish is surprisingly good.

Connecting the device to a Mac reveals that both the Lightning connector and the USB-C connector are fully functional. So it seems possible to charge the device and listen via a wired connection at the same time – which is no longer possible with the iPhone without an adapter since the headphone jack was eliminated in 2016.

The change rallied considerably attention on social media over the weekend. Adding USB-C ports to iPhones has become a popular modification in recent years. This year, Apple is expected to finally transition the iPhone lineup to USB-C amid regulatory pressure.
