Is Cristiano Ronaldo playing today for Portugal vs Liechtenstein? Confirmed lineup, starting 11 for Euro qualifier

Portugal are playing their first game since the 2022 World Cup when they host Liechtenstein in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

Qatar 2022 was a disappointing tournament for Portugal as they were knocked out by Morocco in the quarterfinals.

It was a dramatic season for the Portuguese when Cristiano Ronaldo was surprisingly benched for the knockout stages.

Manager Fernando Santos left the team after the World Cup with all eyes on how new boss Roberto Martinez will use Ronaldo in the future.

Will Ronaldo play for Portugal against Liechtenstein?

Ronaldo has been called up to the Portugal squad to face Liechtenstein in the Euro 2024 qualifier on March 23 and has now been confirmed BEGIN today’s game.

As a result, he becomes the most successful international footballer in history (197) as he surpasses Kuwaiti striker Bader Al-Mutawa with 196 caps.

This is the first game for new coach Martinez, who last led Belgium national team at Qatar 2022.

While Ronaldo fell out of favor under Santos, Martinez stressed his willingness to field Ronaldo regardless of the 38-year-old’s age.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who is very committed to the national team,” said Martinez.

“A player like Cristiano brings experience, he’s an important figure in the team. I don’t look at age or other aspects.

“I think Cristiano has the opportunity to help the team and pass on the experience of his career to the other players.”

Martinez has called up 26 players to his first squad, including Goncalo Ramos, the young striker who took over from Ronaldo’s starting position in Qatar.

Will Ronaldo play at the 2026 World Cup?

The 2022 World Cup was apparently Ronaldo’s last as the 38-year-old confirmed he had given up trying to win one of the few trophies he has not won in his successful career.

“Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram after his team’s departure from Qatar.

“Fortunately, I’ve won many titles of international importance, including for Portugal, but taking our country’s name to the highest level in the world has been my biggest dream.

“I fought for it. I fought a lot for this dream. In the five times I’ve been at World Cups in 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I’ve given everything. I’ve left everything I have I never shied away from the fight and never gave up that dream.

“Unfortunately, that dream came to an end yesterday. There’s no point in reacting hot-headed. I just want everyone to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, a lot has been speculated, but my commitment to Portugal hasn’t changed for a second.”

Ronaldo made 22 World Cup appearances in his career, scoring eight goals and becoming the first man to score in five World Cups.

How many goals has Ronaldo scored for Portugal?

Ronaldo’s status as a Portuguese legend cannot be questioned with the 38-year-old scored 118 goals for the Portugal senior teammost by any man in the history of international football.

Ronaldo struggled in front of goal for Portugal in 2022, but count only three times at 12 appearances.
