Hugh Jackman is known worldwide for portraying the eternally angry, screaming and raw Wolverine/Logan. But the actor had to dig deep and reveal his subtle emotional side in a recent project. In The son, Jackman plays a father who must take care of his teenage son who suffers from depression and more. As such, it’s an emotionally heavy film that pushed the actor to the core as a performer and as a parent. So much so that it brought out his deepest and darkest fears.

The son, isn’t the first time Hugh Jackman has ever worked on dramatic or emotional material. But it was the one that contained more emotional material than anything he’s ever worked on. The logan The actor said in an interview with The Guardian:
“It was technically difficult. It was emotionally difficult. And I just let go a bit, things from my upbringing came up. My worries as a father. That’s new to me. I’ve thought about it and dreamed about it. I was more of a hot mess in it than anything I’ve ever done.”

To make matters worse, Jackman was also struggling with the loss of his father, Christopher Jackman, who died of Alzheimer’s after more than a decade. To make matters worse, his father was buried while he was making the film. But the creators did something that helped Jackman deal with his insecurities and emotional wounds.

The son Creators brought in psychiatrists for Hugh Jackman
The film’s creators, Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton, understood Jackman and his co-star’s feelings and brought psychiatrists to the set. They were there to help the crew and solve mental problems or more. Jackman said he’s never worked with psychiatrists on set, but appreciates the thoughtfulness of the creators.

According to the actor:
“It was the first time I’ve seen something like this in a movie and people used it, and it was necessary. There’s a little bit of the old school part of my brain [that thinks], ‘Well, that’s your job.’ If you need to see a doctor for whatever reason, your foot, your mental health, you know, find out. But I think it would certainly be a sign of an employer that we understand that we care about the whole person, not just paying them, but looking after their well-being in every way is really, really important.”
Zeller and Hampton plan to release it The mother next, which will complete the trilogy that consists of The father And The son at present. As for Jackman, he’s currently preparing for it dead pool 3, where he will reprise his role as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds’ title character.
