Jalen Hurts parents: Meet mom Pamela, dad Averion, siblings & more to know about Eagles QB’s family tree

The Eagles have a chance to win their second Super Bowl in six seasons Sunday — an opportunity unlikely to come without Jalen Hurts.

The third-year Philadelphia quarterback will have his job done against Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs, who are also looking for their second Lombardi Trophy of the 2019 season. Whether Hurts can lead the Eagles to the promised land again remains to be seen, but regardless of the outcome, Hurt’s family will be there to cheer him on. That has always been the case for the Eagles quarterback, from his days at Channelview High School in Texas, his celebrated college career in Alabama and Oklahoma, and now with the Eagles.

However, Hurts isn’t the only one in his family with a notable athletic background. The entire Hurts family is an athlete, which no doubt influenced his development as he grew into one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country.

With that, The Sporting News takes a look at Hurts’ family and how it influenced his growth to become the undisputed leader of the Eagles as a quarterback:

Jalen Hurts father: Averion Hurts

Jalen Hurts father is Averion (pronounced avery-on) Hurts. Like his sons, he is a graduate of Channelview High School, where he played football as an offensive lineman and graduated in 1986. He later attended Division III School at Howard Payne University, where he played football and track and field on scholarship.

His Channelview High School biography lists him as an all-conference lineman in football and a six-time All-America pick in track and field. In 1990 he graduated from Howard Payne with a BA in Marketing.

Hurts began teaching in 1994 and eventually became an assistant football coach in 1996. Ten years later, Hurts became the head football coach at Channelview High School, where he is still listed as the team’s coach.

Jalen Hurts’ mother: Pamela Hurts

Hurts’ mother is Pamela Hurts, who, like her husband, works in the Channelview, Texas School District through at least the 2017-18 school year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in consulting. Her most recent biography lists her as a special math teacher in grades 6-8 at Lance Corporal Anthony Aguirre Junior High School.

Eagles fans can also thank her for letting Hurts play quarterback as opposed to a lineman. Averion Hurts Sr. said this in an interview with Fox 26 Houston in September 2016:

“My wife, she’s the reason they’re quarterbacks,” he said in 2016. “(I) am a bigger guy, you kind of expect, ‘OK, I’ll have some linemen,’ and do these things.” Well, she’s not a tall woman, so she kept her slim. It’s just something that happened to pay off.

Pamela Hurts, in particular, opened up about her son’s quarterback fight with Tua Tagovailoa ahead of the 2018 college football season when they were both still enrolled in Alabama. According to an August 2018 report by Touchdown Alabama Magazine:

“Wow ignorance is bliss (sic),” wrote Pamela Hurts in a Facebook status. “When has Jalen ever spoken to the media about anything other than the team? When has he ever whined, pouted, or talked about things you didn’t know were going on behind the scenes? There’s a reason players aren’t allowed to speak to the media. Jalen finally spoke his truth after being docile and controlled for three years. They have no idea what’s going on and what’s going on – and most likely never will.

“People are quick to praise his character and demeanor, but know he’s totally opposed to those awards today. If you can turn against this young man today and not against your president because of his rhetoric, you never dated him to begin with.”

Jalen Hurts transferred from Alabama after the 2018 season.

Jalen Hurts brother: Averion Hurts Jr.

Hurts’ older brother, Averion Hurts Jr., also played several sports at Channelview High School. A 2012 graduate, he was a starting quarterback and played baseball for the Falcons.

Averion Hurts Sr. said in 2016 it was his eldest son who wanted to be a quarterback when he first started playing football, a decision made by his two sons, who grew up playing baseball. He added that Jalen Hurts has followed in his older brother’s footsteps:

“When Averion (Jr.) started playing, for some reason he wanted to be a quarterback,” Averion Hurts Sr. said in 2016. “That’s exactly what he wanted to do. And they both grew up as baseball kids, so she had arms that could throw. And so they just kept going and Jalen sort of followed that mold.

After graduating from high school, Averion Hurts Jr. enrolled at Texas Southern, a Houston-based HBCU. He eventually became the starting quarterback for the Tigers in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The school lists him with 19 games, completing 211 of 407 passes (51.8 percent) for 2,854 yards and 26 touchdowns on 13 interceptions while 200 times for 398 yards (1.99 yards per carry) for six more Touchdowns rushed.

Averion Hurts Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps and became quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for Summer Creek High School (Houston).

Sister of Jalen Hurts: Kynnedy Hurts

Like her older brothers, Kynnedy Hurts is an athlete. As a senior at Channelview High School, she played volleyball for the Falcons. Her MaxPrep profile lists her as an outside hitter, crediting her with 48 spikes, 71 kills, a .062 batting average, two triple blocks, 66 digs, and 22 attacks.

Jalen Hurt’s girlfriend: Bry Burrows

hurt’s girlfriend, seen partying with him at Lincoln Financial Field after the NFC Championship game, was identified as Bry Burrows. FanBuzz reports that she and Hurts met at university in 2016.

FanBuzz reports that Burrows graduated with two bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and political science from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in business administration. It was also noted that the two later split when Hurts moved to Oklahoma following the 2018 season, although it appears the two have reunited.
