Juventus vs. Sassuolo live score, updates, highlights from Serie A opening weekend

An injury-stricken Juventus side get their 2022/23 Serie A season underway with a visit from Sassuolo in a Monday meeting.

The Old Lady finished a disappointing fourth last season, needing a second-half charge just to secure a Champions League place. Having gone two seasons without a league title, the one-time Serie A frontrunners are hoping to rekindle the dominance of the previous decade. Juve finished in fourth last season, 20 points ahead of 11th-placed Sassuolo.

Monday’s hosts will have to get things started without a host of key players, including midfielder Paul Pogba who is dealing with a knee injury picked up in pre-season. Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is also missing for the season-opener, as is Frenchman Adrien Rabiot, leaving American midfielder Weston McKennie hoping to cement a place in midfield.

Juve are also hoping to avenge last season’s result in this fixture, as Sassuolo bagged a stoppage-time winner to stun the hosts. It was the first-ever league win for Sassuolo in Turin against Juve.

The Sporting News will be following the Juventus-Sassuolo match live and providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Juventus vs. Sassuolo live updates, highlights, commentary

37th min: Chance, Juventus! What a debut for Angel Di Maria! This time the Argentine turns provider with great work down the right, finding Danilo in front of net. Eventually it comes to Vlahovic with his back to net, and he turns and fires just wide right of the post. A third chance goes begging for Vlahovic who looks rusty after a pre-season cut short due to injury.

34th min: A yellow card is produced for new Sassuolo midfielder Kristian Thorstveidt after he and Bremer get tangled up and the Norwegian lets a stray arm catch his counterpart in the face.

31st min: Chance, Sassuolo! This game has exploded to life! Sassuolo defender Kaan Ayhan lets fly from distance and forces an excellent save out of Mattia Perin, diving down to his right to stop the venemous far-post effort.

29th min: Chance, Juventus! The hosts are suddenly on the front foot after the opener, and Dusan Vlahovic comes close again with a leg whip to connect with a Danilo cross. Moving laterally across the face, Vlahovic goes near post and misses just wide right. It’s close to a second in quick succession for Juventus, but Vlahovic probably should have aimed for the other side with the goal gaping.

26th min: GOAL! JUVENTUS! It’s Angel Di Maria with a debut goal! Somewhat against the run of play, the Argentine produces a moment of brilliance. With Juve unable to get a good shot off on a spell of attacking possession, it falls to Di Maria in the penalty area and he whips his left leg at the bouncing ball. He drives it into the ground, and the ball lept exquisitely over the head of Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli, tucking under the crossbar and into the back of the net. A perfect placement!

Watch in the USA:

25th min: The best opportunity for Juve so far sees Locatelli spring Juan Cuadrado, but the Colombian’s cross doesn’t find a mark and skitters harmlessly across the face of goal.

21st min: Chance, Sassuolo! Oh goodness, Juve look horrible in possession! A cheap and dangerous giveaway sees Sassuolo have an opportunity on net, but the lone attacker is closed down by the two Juventus defenders before a shot is loosed. Some whistles can be heard in Allianz Stadium as the hosts look less than sharp, and Sassuolo have come close to taking advantage.

20th min: Chance, Sassuolo! Wow, the first real chance of the match falls to the visitors as Gregoire Defrel ends up entirely unmarked in front of goal, but he can’t get a good shot off despite latching onto a cross at the far post, and it’s into the hands of Mattia Perin, who palms the ball out before it completely crosses the line. So close!

The Martinique international gets another opportunity moments later but his shot from distance is saved by Perin.

19th min: Berardi lets fly from a tight angle down the right but it’s well over the crossbar with Sassuolo’s first chance. Both teams look a little sloppy in possession, with a host of turnovers in midfield by the two clubs.

16th min: Manuel Locatelli is the first into the book, earning an early caution for a very wild challenge on Berardi, sending the blue-shirted opponent flying to the ground. He’s unhappy with the decision but hard to argue as he came in studs up out of control.

15th min: Angel Di Maria will look to link up with Dusan Vlahovic all season long. The Argentine delivers his first cross to his strike partner, but it’s just out of reach. Still, a positive sign for Juve fans who will hope those two develop an incisive relationship.

Di Maria’s Serie A debut gives him minutes in five of Europe’s top flights after previous time in the Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga, and the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

7th min: A tough early break for Sassuolo as right-back Mert Muldur is stretchered off inside the opening 10 minutes, forcing the visitors into an early change. It’s Jeremy Toljan to come on in place of the injured Turk.

5th min: Juve are on the front foot early, and they fire a warning shot as Alex Sandro finds Dusan Vlahovic with a cross from the left, but it’s just inches out of reach. If Vlahovic had gotten his head to it, any potential goal wouldn’t have counted as he looked slightly offside.

1st min: The game is off, and Juventus are under way for the 2022/23 Serie A season!

Pre-Match: Juventus vs. Sassuolo

6 mins to kick: Juventus is always a draw, and the season-opener should be a popular watch, but eyes will be on Domenico Berardi as well. The former Juventus attacker is the Sassuolo captain, having joined the club in 2015. He is now wearing the number 10 shirt this season in a gesture of committment.

33 mins to kick: Adrien Rabiot does not appear in the Juventus matchday squad, but not because of an impending transfer to Manchester United, which is being heavily reported. He is suspended for yellow card accumulation.

Still, there are swirling rumors of the Frenchman’s departure to Man United, with a number of reports claiming the club will look to sell academy product James Garner to finance the move for Rabiot.

60 mins to kick: Lineups are in, and McKennie starts in midfield for Juventus alongside an otherwise expected lineup. Dusan Vlahovic is also fit enough to start, with new summer signing Bremer set to make his Serie A debut at center-back. Angel Di Maria also makes his first appearance in the Italian top flight after joining from PSG this summer.

For Sassuolo, there’s a Serie A debut for Kristian Thorstvedt but Agustin Alvarez will have to wait for his after only being named to the bench.

75 mins to kick: American midfielder Weston McKennie is expected to be available for today’s match despite dislocation his shoulder just weeks ago in pre-season. The USMNT star showed off his personality in a sit-down with U.S. broadcaster CBS.

120 mins to kick: With Juventus hoping to push back up the table and challenge for the title once again, the Old Lady will look to channel the incredible 7-0 home win over Sassuolo from February, 2018 when Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick and Sami Khedira added another two.

Juventus vs. Sassuolo lineups & team news

The most significant opening-day injury for Juventus is to returning midfielder Paul Pogba who suffered a meniscus injury and will be out at least a month as he takes a no-surgery approach to the knee problem.

Also out is goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny who will miss the first few weeks with an adductor injury. That leaves Mattia Perin as the first-choice shot-stopper after the 29-year-old joined from Genoa last summer.

Moise Kean and Adrien Rabiot both sit out this game as they will serve yellow card suspensions carried over from the end of last season. Federico Chiesa is still missing with his ACL injury, but is expected back sometime in early October. Weston McKennie is the go-to in midfield with both Pogba and Rabiot missing, with the American starting despite his dislocated shoulder during preseason initially called for a four-week absence.

Juventus starting lineup (3-5-2, right to left): Perin (GK) — Danilo, Bonucci, Bremer — Cuadrado, Locatelli, McKennie, Zakaria, Sandro – Vlahovic, Di Maria.

Juventus subs (11): Pinsoglio (GK), Garofani, De Sciglio, Gatti, Rugani, Rovella, Kostić, Miretti, Fagioli, Soulé, Da Graca.

Sassuolo will look to reorganize the attack after the transfer of Gianluca Scamacca to Premier League side West Ham. That task is made tougher in the short-term by a foot injury to Hamed Traore.

The visitors are also missing Maxime Lopez who is suspended for yellow card accumulation from last season. Lopez scored the 94th-minute match-winner last time Sassuolo visited Juve for a league game.

New arrivals Agustin Alvarez and Kristian Thorstvedt are both in the squad, with Thorstvedt set for his Serie A debut after being named to the starting lineup. Gregoire Drefel gets the nod up front with Alvarez waiting in the wings.

Sassuolo starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Consigli (GK) — Mildur, Ayhan, Ferrari, Rogerio— Henrique, Frattesi, Thorstvedt – Berardi, Drefel, Kyriakopoulos.

Sassuolo subs (13): Pegolo, Russo, Marchizza, Harroui, Pinamonti, Alvarez, Obiang, Ceide, Raspadori, Toljan, Erlic, D’Andrea, Tressoldi.

Juventus vs. Sassuolo betting odds, lines, picks & prediction

Sassuolo have a horrid record historically against Juventus, but recent results suggest a close match in Turin today.

Overall, Sassuolo have won just twice in 18 league meetings, but one of those was last year’s visit to Allianz Stadium. Additionally, Juve’s poor pre-season saw them cough up four goals to Atletico Madrid, two to Real Madrid, and two to Barcelona. The injuries to goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and midfielder Paul Pogba should also give the visitors a boost.

If you don’t want to back Sassuolo directly, you can also back goals. Both sides have found the back of the net in each of the last seven meetings across all competitions, with Juventus failing to keep a clean sheet in this matchup since their 3-0 win in February 2019.
