Kane’s landmark goal fires Spurs to victory over Wolves – Sporting Life

Antonio Conte says Harry Kane is more focused on trophies than individual milestones after the Tottenham striker set a Premier League record for most goals with a single club in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

Kane’s 185th Premier League goal for Tottenham put him ahead of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero’s 184 goals during his time at Manchester City.

It was also Kane’s 250th goal in all competitions for Tottenham, leaving him 16 goals behind Jimmy Greaves as he seeks to become the north London club’s all-time top scorer.

The defining moment for the 29-year-old came in the second half at Tottenham Hotspur when he headed home from close range.

“I know he’s achieved another great personal achievement, but we’re trying to work together to not only achieve personal achievements, like last season when Son (Heung-min) was the league’s top scorer, but also to to achieve a great collective achievement for the team and the club,” said Conte.

“I think every single player is willing to trade a personal achievement to achieve a trophy. We are working on this aspect. The road is difficult, the road is long, but we must try to do this.”

Despite being well below their best, unbeaten Tottenham sit top of the table having won two of their first three games.

Their stay at the top could be short-lived depending on further results over the weekend, but the feel-good factor around the club is undeniable at the moment.

Conte has revitalized a team that faltered when he took charge last season, guiding them into the Champions League and raising hopes of continued success as a top-four squad.

“In my opinion, in this type of game last season, you were not so willing to find that difficulty and probably in this type of game, you will end up losing,” said Conte.

“I’m confident because this is a really good group of people. The chemistry between us is great and I think that’s important because if you have chemistry, you can overcome difficulties.”

Conte was fined last weekend for his role in the clashes with Thomas Tuchel, which saw the Chelsea manager suspended for a game on the touchline.

Conte’s anger turned to his own players this time as Tottenham were outplayed in the first half and the Italian’s anger finally got the reaction he wanted.

Matheus Nunes, who signed for Wolves at a record £38million ($44million), made an impressive debut following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon this week.

Ruben Neves, another of the seven Portuguese in the Wolves team, tested Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris from distance before Goncalo Guedes fired in a low shot inside that went just wide.

Neves went just wide with a dangerous long-range shot, then Daniel Podence scraped wide from a good position, prompting frustrated groans from Tottenham fans.

But for all their quality in possession, Wolves lacked the edge and that would prove their downfall.

Tottenham were whistled after Pedro Neto slammed into the side netting just before half-time and looked even more lethargic than in last weekend’s limp first half at Chelsea.

On that occasion, they survived thanks to Kane’s equalizer and the England captain again led the charge with a header shot back off the bar early in the second half.

Son Heung-min hit the outside of the near post from a tight angle as Tottenham finally started to make their move.

Tottenham’s sudden push was rewarded in the 64th minute.

Ivan Perisic scored a header and Kane was perfectly positioned for Tottenham’s 1,000. Score a home goal in the Premier League.

Wolves have now gone a disheartening 10 games without a league win, a stark contrast to Tottenham’s positive prospects.
