When this market first opened in May 2022, Young was around +250 and stayed in the +150 to +300 range for the next seven months. It wasn’t until his 321 yards and five touchdowns against the Wildcats in the Sugar Bowl that he became the all-time favorite.
Quarterbacks dominate #1 pick history
Of the 89 first overall picks in NFL draft history, only 34 have been quarterbacks. Running back is next on the list at No. 23, but the last running back to take the overall pick was Ki-Jana Carter to the Cincinnati Bengals in 1995.
Recent history is much more focused on QBs, with the NFL becoming increasingly pass-heavy over the past two decades.
As of 2000, 16 of the 21 first overall picks have been quarterbacks, including four of the last five. Travon Walker, Georgia’s defensive end, stopped a streak of four straight QBs just last season and went as the overall winner to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who brought in No. 1 QB Trevor Lawrence a year earlier.
Which NFL team will be number 1 in 2023?
The potential for a non-QB to take first place overall for the second straight season is validated by the current draft order. From today’s perspective, the 2023 first overall pick belongs to the Chicago Bears, who are building the 11th pick in the 2021 draft around 23-year-old quarterback Justin Fields.
Fields still has a long way to go as a passer but has shown he has unprecedented double threat potential. The Ohio State product broke the single-game rushing record for QBs last season (178) and had the second most rushing yards in a season with a pivot. It would be a surprise if the Bears retained the No. 1 spot And took a quarterback. The believable mock drafts of 2023, which leaves Chicago at No. 1, see the Bears pick either Jalen Carter (Daniel Jeremiah, Mel Kiper) or Will Anderson (Ryan Wilson, Walter Football).
The next teams in the draft order are not set as per the QB position.
2023 NFL Draft Orders – Top Ten

9 | Carolina Panther |
10 | Philadelphia Eagles (from New Orleans Saints) |
The Texans (Davis Mills), Colts (Matt Ryan), and Seahawks (Geno Smith) all have mediocre or below-average veterans up front and will be looking for a quarterback. The bears could trade down to 6th place and be fairly confident that several of the top 5 picks will be spent on QBs.
Mock drafts were split between Young, Stroud and Richardson
The mock drafts listing the bears traded from #1 do not generally have Young first. CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli has the Texans traded for Stroud. NFL.com’s Chris Trapasso shows the Colts using the top pick on Richardson. While ESPN’s The Athletic and Jordan Reid trade the Colts and Texans, respectively, for Young.
The 2023 NFL Draft will be held in Kansas City, Missouri. The first round will air Thursday, April 27 at 8 p.m. EST on the NFL Network.
