Leeds United vs. Manchester United live score, updates, highlights and lineups as feisty first half ends goalless
Leeds United and Manchester United played out a tempestuous and goalless first half at Elland Road in the Premier League, four days on from their rearranged 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
Between them, the sides racked up 16 fouls amid a white-hot atmosphere, with Leeds duo Junior Firpo and Weston McKennie joining Fred in the book.
The home side, playing again under caretaker boss Michael Skubala after Jessie Marsch’s sacking at the start of the week, went closest through a pair of Crysencio Summerville chances.
Manchester United enjoyed the clearest opening of the half in stoppage time when Bruno Fernandes went through on goal following an error from Max Wober, with Leeds goalkeeper Ilan Meslier standing firm to save superbly.

Leeds United vs Manchester United live updates, highlights from the Premier League
70th minute: Luke Ayling, who has produced a typically all-action display, swivels to send an overhead kick into David de Gea’s arms from Jack Harrison’s latest corner.
67th minute: Wilfried Gnonto cuts inside and shoots. It’s a routine save for David de Gea, but this one is opening up.
65th minute: Fred fires off a shot from slightly closer to goal but if flies over.
63rd minute: Diogo Dalot clatters the crossbar!Out of nowhere, Man United almost take the lead. Dalot lines up a piledriver from 25 yards to leave the bar shaking. Meslier was rooted to the spot.
61st minute: Double change for Manchester United. Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho are on for Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho. Erik ten Hag needed to switch things up because, for an hour, this has not worked at all.
60th minute: Long delay for the corner after some pushing and shoving in the box. Bruno Fernandes boots Jack Harrison’s delivery clear at the near post.
58th minute: Here comes Georginio Rutter with a chance to be a hero on his home debut for Leeds. A dejected Patrick Bamford makes way. Jack Harrison delivers a corner from the left. Robin Koch’s header is deflected behind and Leeds will get another go.
55th minute: Marcus Rashford, who has existed on the margins of this one, gets the ball on the left and burst into the Leeds box. He runs into traffic and goes to ground under attention from Luke Ayling and Tyler Adams. No penalty. It felt like a half-appeal at best.
54th minute: Bruno Fernandes is down for a bit of treatment. That handily takes the sting out of things for United. Erik ten Hag is giving some animated instructions to Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer.
51st minute: Now Luke Ayling goes close! Another Leeds corner and David de Gea – so much more adept with his hands than his feet – gets through the traffic to punch clear.
49th minute: Chances starting to flow for Leeds. Jack Harrison is unable to prod in at the near post with the outside of his left foot. Now David de Gea makes a compete mess of a clearance. Patrick Bamford can’t capitalise but Man United need to compose themselves quickly.
48th minute: Leeds work the short corner well. Weston McKennie gets the header about four yards from goal but the midfielder gets too much underneath it.
47th minute: That man Crysencio Summerville again gives United cause for concern. He drops into a pocket of space 256 yards from goal, turns and unleashes a low drive that David de Gea turns behind.
46th minute: We’re back underway!
Halftime: Leeds survive that brief storm in first-half stoppage time. This has been intense, suffocatingly so at times and gripping, if a little light on quality. Whoever produces the first significant piece of that might very well find themselves in the box seat. Got and grab some refreshments and see us back here shortly.
45th minute+2: Luke Shaw’s corner skims of Luke Ayling and Marcus Rashford is agnoisingly close to converting at the back post.
45th minute+1: Huge save from Ilan Meslier. Max Wober makes a dreadful error and Bruno Fernandes is in on goal. The Portugal star steadies himself and shoots low, but Meslier stands firm to save superbly with his boot.
45th minute: Patrick Bamford untidily fouls Fred. Harry Maguire untidily fouls Bamford. It’s a bit silly at this point.
44th minute: Crysencio Summerville goes close again. He can’t get clean contact after Tyrell Malacia makes a hash of Robin Koch’s high ball but it requires a combination of Harry Magurie and David de Gea to deal with the resulting scramble.
43rd minute: The Malacia-Summerville running battle continues, with the Leeds man brought down from behind. Paul Tierney again keeps his cards in his pocket.
39th minute: A rare venture into the Leeds box for Man United. Bruno Fernandes’ cross pinballs about and the ball loops up off the back of Tyler Adams’ head. It’s a brief nervy moment for Ilan Meslier but he gathers in his goalmouth. United then snaffle a second ball and Fernandes tries to float a finish towards the corner. Meslier gathers. In the build-up to the latter chance, Weston McKennie flew into Marcus Rashford and acquires what, it must be said, is a very hard-earned booking.
36th minute: In the follow-up to that attack, Tyler Adams fouled Tyrell Malacia and took a whack in the face for his trouble. The United States international appears to have all his teeth intact after a nod to this evening’s Superbowl and he’s okay to continue.
35th minute: Ooh, dicey moment for Harry Maguire, who is lethargic in possession and Jack Harrison picks his pocket. However, the England defender keeps his composure, knows Harrison wants to cut back onto his left foot and dispossesses the Leeds attacker as white-shirted support failed to arrive.
33rd minute: Luke Ayling and Tyrell Malacia get involved in a bit of nonsense. Marcus Rashford acts as peacemaker. The two full-backs are then called over by referee Paul Tierney who is treated to them having a very unconvincing cuddle.
31st minute: If Erik ten Hag picked Harry Maguire simply to head away Jack Harrison free-kicks repeatedly (yes, they’ve given away another one) then he is absolutely fulfilling the brief.
30th minute: Marcel Sabitzer crashes clumsily into Wilfried Gnonto and Leeds have another set with which to test their visitors. Again, it comes to nought.
27th minute: Crysencio Summerville leaves a little bit on Bruno Fernandes, who looks like he’s having a little Crysencio of his own on the floor.
25th minute: Tyler Adams wins another free-kick in a useful position. Jack Harrison is over it again, presumably on the grounds that it can’t be worse than his last one. It isn’t, it’s actually quite good, but Harry Maguire gets his nut on it.
21st minute: What had “21st minute” in their Fred Yellow Card Against Leeds Sweepstake? Collect your winnings. From the resulting set piece, Leeds get the ball into a dangerous area and a sliding Wout Weghorst is back to clear for Man United.
20th minute: Jadon Sancho finds Bruno Fernandes is oceans of space on the edge of the area. What are the Leeds defence doing? More to the point, what is Fernandes doing as he drags a very presentable change horribly wide.
18th minute: The referee’s patience has been exhausted. Junior Firpo stretches into a challenge with Jadon Sancho, studs showing, and becomes the first player booked. That might temper some of Leeds’ physical enthusiasm.
14th minute: Harrison duffs the ball at the bottom of the two-man defensive wall. Answers on a postcard!
13th minute: Fred catches Jack Harrison’s ankle and Leeds have a free-kick in a good position, about 35 yards from goal and in-field from the right flank.
12th minute: United play nicely through some snapping Leeds challenges and there could be a counter-attack on. But Weghorst boots the ball towards Rashford, who is standing in an offside position, can’t very well do much about anything and it goes out for a throw.
10th minute: Jack Harrison whips in a nice-looking cross from the Leeds left but that’s easy for David de Gea with no attackers applying pressure.
9th minute: After a relatively calmer period of United possession, Weston McKennie and Fred joust down the right flank and Leeds have a throw-in in a good position. The ball is crossed low but the offside flag is up.
5th minute: Weston McKennie puts in another rip-roaring challenge on Tyrell Malacia, who thumps his head on the turf and needs treatment. As that goes on, Erik ten Hag is making representations to the fourth official.
4th minute: Chance for Leeds! Patrick Bamford scrambles the ball across the six-yard box to Crysencio Summerville, who fires over under pressure from Tyrell Malacia, whose midfield starting position was probably helpful for him in terms of getting back to challenge Summerville.
3rd minute: In possession, Tyrell Malacia is tucking into midfield and United are fanning out into a back three, very much in the style of Manchester’s other team. It will be interesting to see how Diogo Dalot copes on the right of a back three, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka feels better suited to that role.
1st minute: Any duel won or attempted by a Leeds player is being roared to the rafters. Any spell of Manchester United possession soundtracked by a hail of boos. Buckle up!
1 min from kickoff: The players are taking their positions. Bruno Fernandes has some animated final instructions for Jadon Sancho. It is loud out there.
5 mins from kickoff: Marching On Together fires up around Elland Road. The players will be with us imminently.
20 mins from kickoff: Wout Weghorst is leading the line once again for Manchester United. It feels like a pretty big afternoon for the Netherlands striker. So far, he has one goal in seven appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions. That came in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest. With Jadon Sancho back in the mix and Marcus Rashford scoring more than enough goals to confidently operate as a central attacker, time might be running out for Weghorst to produce a statement performance. United don’t have another forward option quite like him, but he must prove he can be more of a help than a hindrance.
40 mins from kickoff: Georginio Rutter became Leeds’ record signing before the transfer window closed. The 20-year-old striker has been restricted to a couple of substitute cameos away from home and is on the bench again today. Coming off the bench to score against Man United would be some way to announce himself to the Leeds faithful.
55 mins from kickoff: There are two changes for Leeds from their midweek XI, with Junior Firpo and Crysencio Summerville handed starts. Luis Sinisterra and Pascal Struijk were substituted with knocks at Old Trafford and miss out
1 hour from kickoff: The teams are out. Jadon Sancho starts for United and Harry Maguire makes a Premier League starting lineup for just the fifth time this season. Two of his four starts so far came in August.
1hr 20 mins from kickoff: Team news is just 20 minutes away and it will be interesting to see whether Erik ten Hag has been tempted to throw Jadon Sancho into the starting lineup. The England winger made his first Premier League appearance since October when he came on and scored against Leeds, following a difficult period away from the pitch. It took him to three in 11 league outings under Ten Hag. Quietly, Sancho was rebuilding after a difficult first season at Old Trafford. Can that process continue at pace now he’s back in the fold?
1hr 40 mins from kickoff: It’s safe to say few people gave Leeds any chance when they arrived in Manchester in midweek, Jesse Marsch’s departure still a very fresh memory for a team badly out of form and threatened with relegation. By fulltime, there was a sense of disappointment that they had not taken three points, having opened up a 2-0 lead before Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho rescued United. Since beating neighbours Manchester City last month, Erik ten Hag’s team have hit a bit of a blip, winning only one of their past four Premier League games. Nevertheless, they can move into second with a win today.
2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to the Sporting News’ live coverage of Leeds United vs. Manchester United from Elland Road. Four days on from a rollercoaster 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, the two sides will go again amid what is sure to be a white-hot atmosphere in West Yorkshire.
Leeds United vs Man United lineups
