The two-year deal he signed with Mercedes in 2021 is said to be worth £45.8m ($55m) a year and his career earnings are reported to have reached £397.3m ($477.2m).

Lewis Hamilton’s tax status

In 2017, widespread reports said that Hamilton appears to have used letterbox companies in the British Virgin Islands, the Isle of Man and Guernsey to collect the entire £3.3 million in taxes that came to England from Canada in 2013.

According to the reports, Hamilton set up another business in the Isle of Man to buy a £1.4million ($1.7million) motorhome. The Guardian said at the time Hamilton was under contract to Mercedes through a company in the tax haven of Guernsey, had a Maltese image rights company and had been living in tax exile since 2007, first in Switzerland and then in Monaco.

Hamilton said he hired a senior attorney to conduct checks and was told everything he had done was lawful, adding that he relied on professional advice rather than the day-to-day running of his business cared.

Hamilton denied using shell companies, saying the Manx units were part of his deals. There is no indication that he was directly involved in creating the system for his jet, and legitimate tax avoidance schemes are not illegal.

In 2020, The Times reported that those responsible for deciding when Hamilton would be knighted in the UK were “very close” to his tax situation.

The racing legend will officially receive the honor in 2021. He told The Sunday Times Style magazine in 2017: “What people don’t know is that I pay taxes here, but I don’t make all my money here.
