Lexington Sporting Club to Play Inaugural Professional Season at Georgetown College
Professional football comes to Georgetown College. Lexington Sporting Club has partnered with Georgetown College to serve as the professional club’s temporary home ground beginning in the 2023 season while the club builds its own stadium.
“Finding the right home for 2023 was important to us and we couldn’t be happier with our partnership with Georgetown College,” said Bill Shively, principal owner of Lexington SC. “There are many variables to consider when looking for a home while pursuing our own football-specific stadium. We want to create a fan-friendly atmosphere and we need to make sure we offer the team a professional environment.”
The 5,000-seat stadium is home to the Georgetown College football, soccer and lacrosse teams and has served as a hub for community activities for years with state and local soccer championship events. The stadium previously served as the longtime home of the Cincinnati Bengals’ summer training camp.
“By partnering with Lexington SC, Georgetown College is not only able to provide our student athletes with a world-class athletic experience, but also brings professional sports to Scott County,” said Dr. Rosemary Allen, President of Georgetown College. “The economic impact on the local community will be a significant benefit for the region and for young football players as LSC and GC will work together to offer summer football camps. We look forward to the many opportunities that students, athletes, families and the community will enjoy when Lexington SC takes place at Georgetown College.”
In preparation for the club’s first season, Lexington SC will install several facility updates, most notably a new state-of-the-art artificial turf field that will mimic the product installed at the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins training facility. The Matrix Helix turf offers all athletes a safe surface and relief from the heat as the field features EcoTherm infill which can reduce the surface temperature of the field by almost 30 degrees. It’s the same surface Lexington SC is installing at its multi-million dollar Athens Boonesboro Road training facility, which serves the club’s 1,400 youth players and is scheduled to open this spring.
The collaboration extends beyond the field as Georgetown College and Lexington SC will integrate professional club into the college’s sports management curriculum by providing opportunities to invite club leaders into the classroom, students to gain experience through internships, and much more.
“This partnership sends a signal that Georgetown College is a destination for athletics and the wider community. During this process, it was easy to work with Lexington SC and ensure this project goes ahead by making their leadership team available. This partnership will allow us to install the same playing surface found in SoFi and AT&T stadiums in the NFL. I also want to thank the Georgetown College Board of Trustees for their support of this collaboration,” said Brian Evans, GC vice president of athletics.
Lexington SC will kick off its first professional soccer campaign on March 18th at One Knoxville in Knoxville, TN, followed by a trip to Cary, NC to play North Carolina FC on April 1st. The home opener at Georgetown College is April 8 against Forward Madison at 7:00 p.m. EST; the full schedule is linked here. Ticket information will be released in the coming days. Fans can still queue for season tickets on the club’s website at www.lexsporting.com before tickets go on sale to the public.
