LIVE: Street closed off by police after suspect dies following ‘stabbing’ – latest updates

A street in Leigh remains cordoned off by police this morning after a suspect died after being ‘stabbed’.

Emergency services were first called around 9.10pm last night (Thursday) to reports of a stabbing in Park Lane. A man was taken to hospital from the scene of the accident with serious injuries.

The suspect – another man – fled the scene after the attack, police said. He was arrested shortly thereafter, but then became “seriously ill”.

Unfortunately, the man died despite the best efforts of police officers and paramedics. A GMP spokesman said: “At around 9.10pm this evening (Thursday 9 February 2023) officers were called to reports of a stabbing in Park Lane, Leigh.

“Emergency services were at the scene and a male victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The suspect fled the scene after the attack, but officers were able to quickly apprehend the suspect.


“Shortly thereafter, the male suspect became seriously ill and, despite the best efforts of officers and emergency services at the scene, the man sadly died.”

Last night a section of Manchester Road was closed following the incident. Mill Lane and a footpath off Holden Road were also reported taped off by officers.

This morning, nearby Edale Road was cordoned off by officers. Several police vehicles are stationed at the site.

The MEN contacted Greater Manchester Police for a further update this morning.

Full statement issued by GMP last night

In a statement, a GMP spokesman said:

“At around 9:10pm this evening (Thursday 9 February 2023) officers were called to reports of a stabbing in Park Lane, Leigh.

“Emergency services were at the scene and a male victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“The suspect fled the scene after the attack, but officers were able to quickly apprehend the suspect.

“Shortly thereafter, the male suspect became seriously ill and unfortunately, despite the best efforts of officers and emergency services at the scene, the man died.

“An investigation has been launched and officers will remain at the scene to conduct further investigations.”
