Liverpool can look at these 3 transfers to instantly fix their midfield problem
Liverpool can look at these three transfers to immediately fix their midfield problem. The Reds have been linked to some stars.
Liverpool currently have a problem in midfield. It’s certainly not in the crowd – the Reds have seven or eight players to fill their three central spots. But the quality there is questionable.
Or at least the options Jurgen Klopp actually has to fall back on might not be what he needs in midfield. Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are all world-class players but the three of them have questionable injury histories. Thiago actually went out against Fulham.
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also have those doubts, but without securing first-team spots. Their contracts also expire in a year. So does James Milner and at 36 is not a long-term option. Then there’s Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho, none of whom have the requisite midfield experience yet.
And all of that is why, as the Athletic points out, Klopp has gone from ‘definitely no transfers’ to ‘we don’t need anyone new at the moment’ to ‘it should make sense in the short and long term’. within two months.
Assuming Liverpool entered the market, who would they go after? We looked at three signings who could really solve their midfield problem right away.
Liverpool midfield transfers
Jew Bellingham
Let’s start with the most obvious. There’s little doubt Liverpool want Bellingham – as Athletic’s article points out. Fabrizio Romano recently claimed the Reds were also on the phone this summer. But Borussia Dortmund will not sell.
And we just can’t see it that way in 2022. 2023 is admittedly very possible but we don’t think Liverpool can sign him for this season. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t try again.
Bellingham is about as perfect as it gets as a midfield signing and he should be priority one. Even at a ridiculous price.
We just think Liverpool need to look elsewhere if they are worried about this season.
Matheus Nunes
Reports from Portugal have consistently claimed Liverpool want Nunes from Sporting CP. Correio de Manha is one of them, with O Jogo claiming the asking price for the 23-year-old is £51million.
It doesn’t sound like Sporting wants to sell, but the right price would almost certainly set things off. Nunes could also be a player to pay above the odds for as his style of play seems wonderfully suited to Liverpool.
This might be the most realistic option for the Reds at the moment if they want a strong midfield signing.
Nico Barella
We have our doubts that Liverpool are actually interested in Barella but there have certainly been claims that they are. CalcioMercatoWeb is the most recent outlet to say that – we don’t rate them highly, however.
However, Gazzetta Dello Sport was one of several Italian outlets that claimed there was interest a year ago. Barella were at the top of the world after a Serie A title with Inter and then Euro 2020 with Italy. He was praised by Fabio Capello, who named him one of the top three in Europe.
It seems hard to believe that Inter would sell right at the end of the transfer window but a big offer could always tempt them. Barella would be something of a statement for Liverpool and one who could lead their midfield for a long time to come.
Certainly he is worth a look.
