Jurgen Klopp has given Liverpool the green light to appoint Jörg Schmadtke as their new sporting director, bringing the club one step closer to hiring.

Julian Ward, Liverpool’s current sporting director, is set to step down this summer, just a year after he succeeded the hugely successful Michael Edwards.

The club’s hierarchy is keen to fill the vacancy before the transfer window reopens to give Liverpool the best chance of success in their attempts to make a squad change.

Schmadtke will sign a contract until June 2026 if negotiations continue as expected, while Klopp’s contract expires in the same month. The Liverpool manager is rumored to be a fan of Schmadtke, who is a respected figure in German football.

Scmadtke’s appointment is approaching at Anfield

The Liverpool hierarchy will therefore soon enter into advanced negotiations with Schmadtke Daily mail. The 59-year-old’s signing is expected in the near future as the transfer window reopens in less than two months.

This summer will be crucial to Liverpool’s chances of success next season. Klopp’s side are fifth in the Premier League, a point behind Manchester United in fourth after playing one more game and could miss out on Champions League competition next season.

For Klopp’s squad to be successful again, many of the squad will need to undergo an overhaul.

In recent years, Liverpool have won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, among others. Consequently, Liverpool’s up and down form this season has come as a surprise to observers.

Liverpool have considered numerous candidates for the position, including Monaco’s Paul Mitchell. In November, Ward, who had been linked with a similar position at Ajax, announced his intention to leave Liverpool. He was Edward’s deputy before assuming the position.

Schmadtke’s football experience could benefit Liverpool

If an agreement can be reached, Schmadtke will join Liverpool’s recruitment team alongside veteran staffers Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter. Priority is being given to acquiring a new central midfielder, with Mason Mount and Alexis Mac Allister on the shortlist.

After being a goalkeeper at Fortuna Düsseldorf, Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schmadtke pursued a career as a football manager. In 1998 he put on his gloves and three years later became sports director of Alemannia Aachen.

Aachen was heavily in debt when Schmadtke signed, but reached the 2004 DFB Cup final as second division side, losing 3-2 to Werder Bremen. The following year, in 2006, they were promoted to the Bundesliga.

In his four years as sporting director at the Niedersachsenstadion, Schmadtke helped Hannover qualify for the UEFA Cup after being called up to the position in 2009. He then moved to Cologne in 2013 and was instrumental in promotion to the Bundesliga the following year.

Schmadtke was appointed as Wolfsburg’s sporting director in 2018 but is available after retiring in February.

“I’ve been doing all this for so long and I’ve realized it’s time to end this chapter. There are other things in life that I would like to do. First and foremost, I’m thinking of my wife, my family, who had to put many years back,” he said in a statement after retiring from the role.
