Major support for Tasmanian grassroots sporting clubs

Rockliff’s liberal government supports our grassroots sport and leisure sector to ensure it continues to provide safe, fair and inclusive opportunities for all Tasmanians.

Thirty-four sports clubs and organizations across the state will contribute a total of $1.1 million as part of the 2022-23 State Sports and Recreation Grants Program.

Grants of up to $60,000 are available under the program to help state athletic organizations, state disability sports organizations and recreational providers offer more athletic and recreational programs.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Nic Street said the funding would give a big boost to grassroots sport and recreation in Tasmania.

“At the heart of our government’s sports and recreation strategy is enabling increased grassroots participation. This program will allow our amazing sports and leisure providers to expand their capacity and offer programs in everything from equestrianism to surf lifesaving to gymnastics,” Minister Street said.

Ten Pin Bowling Tasmania President Garry Crick says they will use the funding to run participation programs to try to get more young Tasmanians active and involved in the sport.

“This funding is critical to helping Tasmanians enjoy tenpin bowling. Learn to Bowl with Bowl Patrol (kids) or Bowl Abilities (adults) teaches the basics of tenpin bowling and whether you’re looking to get off the couch, represent Australia or are looking for fun entertainment for the whole family, tenpin bowling is for everyone.” said Mr. Crick.

New Horizons CEO Belinda Kitto said the funding would greatly enhance their ability to provide inclusive programs for Tasmanians with disabilities.

“This important government funding means New Horizons Tasmania can expand the results of delivering inclusive programs by helping build the capacity of community clubs to be accessible and welcoming to people with disabilities,” said Ms. Kitto.

“Funding also helps us provide representative trails for Tasmanian elite athletes with disabilities.”

Rockliff’s liberal government will continue to offer targeted support schemes to enable all Tasmanians to pursue their favorite sport or activity.
