Man United vs Leeds United score, result as Rashford, Sancho rescue comeback point for Red Devils at home
An absolutely electric match at Old Trafford between two old rivals ended with honours even as Manchester United engineered a two-goal comeback to rescue a 2-2 draw.
The game was played at breakneck speed across the entire 90 minutes, as halftime did little to break up the frenetic pace. Leeds United bagged scrappy goals to start both halves, as Wilfried Gnonto scored 55 seconds into the match and then again off a Raphael Varane own-goal four minutes into the second half.
Yet as they have many times this year, Leeds struggled to defend in long stretches, as their blistering style of play cost them on multiple occasions. Marcus Rashford brought the Red Devils a goal back just past the half-hour mark, and then substitute Jadon Sancho came off the bench to equalise just nine minutes later.
United could have had more chances, largely through Alejandro Garnacho who was extremely bright in the opening 45 minutes, but the midfield play was extremely sloppy by the hosts. Fred in particular could not maintain possession under the pressing of American duo Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, the former making his first Premier League start.
These two teams will link up again at Elland Road in just four days’ time, as a rescheduled fixture makes for odd back-to-back league battles.

Man United vs Leeds United post-match analysis
Man United miss Casemiro, Eriksen dearly
The Manchester United midfield was carved to pieces today on numerous occasions, and the absence of Brazilian anchor Casemiro was evident.
Marcel Sabitzer was a positive on his debut, but his midfield pivot partner Fred was dreadful, giving the ball away consistently and allowing Leeds to muck up the game. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie were a menace all match, disrupting the middle of the park with their work rate and positioning.
When Casemiro returns this midfield will be a force again, as Sabitzer is a quality player, but Fred is not up to the level required at this point. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Scott McTominay slide back in if he comes back from injury before Casmiro is back.
Leeds United style of play no different after Marsch departure
This match was played at absolute blistering pace, as Leeds United have done under Jesse Marsch and even Marcelo Bielsa before him. There’s really no difference between this team before and after the American was let go, at least in style.
Leeds were, however, able to capitalise on their chances in front of net, which is something they’ve struggled with so far this season. They could have even had more, as Brenden Aaronson hit the post with a free-kick late.
Still, this exhausting style of play has its clear disadvantages. Leeds were constantly wide open at the back, and Manchester United on another day could have scored for or five goals. This style of play is fun as heck, but it’s not really sustainable in its current form. Luke Ayling in particular couldn’t handle his defensive duties out wide, and was completely out of gas by the end of the match. Whoever comes in on a permanent basis may want to calm things down a bit on the field to keep this team afloat.
What exactly does Wout Weghorst bring to Man United?
Manchester United have Marcus Rashford back to his best up front, Alejandro Garnacho is a bright young talent who put in an excellent first 45 minutes, and Jadon Sancho got on the scoresheet and is making his way back to form. In that sense, this Red Devils attack is in a good place.
Yet they are still missing a quality No. 9. They went out and got Wout Weghorst at the end of the January transfer window, but he’s not yet proven his ability to slot into the position and provide the necessary ability to bring his teammates into the action.
The tall, lumbering Dutchman was dropping far too deep, and was unable to provide the necessary hold-up play to make that kind of action useful. As a result, he was invisible in the final third. If there’s any indication of how Weghorst held United back, their comeback began almost immediately after he was withdrawn, as Marcus Rashford was slotted up front with both Sancho and Facundo Pellistri out wide.
It was hard to see what Weghorst brought to this team when he was first introduced, and he hasn’t settled in to a valuable role yet. There’s no indication to this point that he’s capable of doing so down the road.
Man United vs Leeds United live updates, highlights, commentary
FULLTIME: Man United 2-2 Leeds United
Life after Jesse Marsch begins with a valuable point for Leeds United, while Manchester United will cling to the draw knowing it could have been much worse.
An absolutely thrilling match that was played at lightning pace the entire way. Credit both sides who gave absolutely everything throughout the 90 minutes. There were positives and negatives for both clubs, but in the end probably a fair result.
Manchester United could have had more, but they were sloppy in midfield and toothless at times in the first half, so it’s hard to say they deserved all three points in this one.
Man United vs Leeds United: Second half
90+3 min: This is a sloppy finish as you’d expect, as the ball pings between teams in midfield. Can Leeds United hang on to this very valuable point?
89th min: The end to this match is exhausting. Luke Ayling has nothing left in the tank, and can barely challenge Luke Shaw down the left flank as he nearly works a chance for Fred which is blocked. Leeds make another change, but it’s not for Ayling, but instead Weston McKennie and Wilfried Gnonto who are replaced by Mateo Fernandez and Sam Greenwood. Five minutes of added time…
87th min: Yikes, nervy moment for Leeds as Junior Firpo goes into a 50/50 challenge with Bruno Fernandes and the referee blows the whistle after Fernandes goes flying. The official has a long think about more punishment, with Firpo already on a yellow card, but decides against it. Probably the right decision.
The free kick delivery is very nervy for Leeds at the back, as Marcus Rashford nearly gets on the end of it at the near post, but Weston McKennie gets just a whisker of a touch on it to put him off.
81st min: Chance, Man United! WHOA, Bruno Fernandes comes very close from essentially nothing. The Portuguese playmaker had very few options at the top of the penalty area, so he says YOLO, puts his head down, and rips one. It clearly caught the entire Leeds defence, and Illan Meslier, off guard, but it flashes just inches over the crossbar. Look out!
80th min: Yellow card to Marcel Sabitzer who has no choice but to hip-check Wilfried Gnonto and absorb the caution. It comes on a giveaway by Fred, who really should shoulder the blame for that one. Changes being readied on the Manchester United sideline.
78th min: Chance, Man United! WHAT A SAVE BY MESLIER! The Leeds United goalkeeper leaps full-stretch up high to stop a Raphael Varane header that was destined to secure all three points! It was extremely similar to Rashford’s opener, except this time it’s Bruno Fernandes to send in the cross to Varane’s head. That’s a top drawer save! Luke Ayling the man who was beat in the air by the French defender.
77th min: Junior Firpo gets a yellow for yanking down Marcus Rashford on the break, as easy a call as the referee will ever make as he’d been beat and grabbed the England international by both shoulders.
71st min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! It’s the substitute Jadon Sancho, and Leeds have coughed up the lead! The visitors have conceded waves and waves of pressure, and finally break. Luke Shaw wins thte ball back and runs right at the Leeds defense, and while his cutback is deflected, it falls right to Jadon Sancho who collects and gets it on frame, and Illan Meslier sees it late.
This game is ELECTRIC!

69th min: Chance, Man United! Leeds survive another near-miss! There’s a cutback from the left that skitters across the face of goal, and it falls to Bruno Fernandes who’s somewhat surprised by the chance. He improvises a poke on goal, but it’s blocked at the last moment. He had a good look there!
Moments later, Marcus Rashford goes down in the penalty area and the whole of Old Trafford erupts, but no call from Simon Hooper. Luke Ayling gave him a bump but there’s not nearly enough in that.
65th min: Chance, Leeds United! The substitute Brenden Aaronson nearly restores the two-goal lead! He rips a free-kick over the wall, and it dips down perfectly but is denied by the woodwork. So close! David de Gea looked to be in the area to make the save but he watches it go by, possibly screened by the wall and late to react.
62nd min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Who else but Marcus Rashford to get Manchester United back in the match! It’s nothing special, with Diogo Dalot sending in a cross to the head of Rashford, who beats Robin Koch in the air. It’s an old-school header, and Leeds are unable to keep the clean sheet.
Expect waves of Manchester United attacking play the rest of the way. Leeds United make a pair of changes, with Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford replaced by Brenden Aaronson and Georginio Rutter.
Watch in the USA:
Watch in Canada:
59th min: Marcus Rashford has a go, his first shot of the game, but he misses badly. Jadon Sancho enters, with Wout Weghorst coming off as speculated. Alejandro Garnacho is also coming off, which is a real surprise, with Facundo Pellistri entering on his Premier League debut.
I’m legitimately shocked that Garnacho’s been yanked, as he has been the home side’s best attacker by a massive margin.
57th min: The referee has to be careful of losing control of this match. Junior Firpo has a hard tackle on Alejandro Garnacho and concedes a free kick, but reacts angrily to the decision. There’s a lot riding on every whistle as the ground is very tense. The free-kick is wasted, and Jadon Sancho looks to be readying on the touchline.
53rd min: Look out. Weston McKennie gets a yellow card for a hard tackle on Fred. McKennie kicks the ball away to stop the free kick, and Fred angrily blasts the ball into the American. Luke Shaw comes over and gives McKennie a huge shove. All told, only the caution to McKennie and nothing more. He’s never been one to back down from a physical scuffle.
49th min: GOAL! LEEDS UNITED! They’ve started this half the same as the last! Manchester United haven’t had a touch of the ball since the restart, and Leeds cash in! It’s the substitute Summerviille with the cross after United fail to break out of their own half, and it tips off Raphael Varane and deflects into the back of his own net! Manchester United have it all to do now, as they’re 2-0 down!
There’s a huge Man United appeal for handball off Robin Koch in the bulidup, but there’s nothing in that, as it may have touched it in the early scrum but only
Watch in the USA:
48th min: No substitutions, but looks like Marcus Rashford has started this first half on the left wing, his preferred side, whereas he played on the right all first half. That’s an interesting decision considering Alejandro Garnacho was exceptional on that left flank through the first 45 minutes.
Kickoff: It will be interesting to see how Erik ten Hag makes his second-half adjustments. He’s been very good at tweaking his tactical approach this season, and he’ll need to do so again here. Alejandro Garnacho was exceptional in that half, but he was mostly on an island, with Marcus Rashford stuck too wide and Wout Weghorst dropping too deep to have an impact.
At what point will the substitutions come if the scoreline remains in favor of Leeds? Wouldn’t be surprising to see Weghorst come off for Jadon Sancho, moving Rashford up front.
HALFTIME: Man United 0-1 Leeds United
Stop and catch your breath, because that was an exhausting first half. The two teams ran at each other the entire way, with the hosts only occasionally settling down in possession.
Leeds got the early breakthrough, but they are lucky to get to the break still in the lead. Alejandro Garnacho was excellent on the wing, shredding Luke Ayling on multiple occasions. Meanwhile, the forward pairing of Marcus Rashford and Wout Weghorst were both nearly invisible.
The American partnership of Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie in midfield for Leeds were energetic and valuable, but the hosts found tons of joy out wide. Come back for the second half because this one is likely to get even more bonkers.
Man United vs Leeds United: First half
45+6 min: Wow, the substitute Crysencio Summerville steals the ball in the attacking third, and he’s most certainly fouled by Lisandro Martinez going hip-to-hip. It’s not given by the official, so while there’s a VAR check, it’s outside the penalty area so no further action can be taken. A let-off for Manchester United, because that should have been a dangerous set-piece chance for Leeds.
45+2 min: There are eight minutes of stoppage time thanks to a number of first half injuries. There’s a coming together between Lisandro Martinez and Jack Harrison, and it’s a naughty one as he gets a boot to the opponent’s face, but no action is taken. That decision comes after it looking like the official had some communication over the technology with his assistants. It looks like the players are all exhausted as both sides limp towards halftime.
Watch in the USA:
44th min: Amidst a Man United spell of possession, Gnonto retakes the field, but is clearly struggling. Leeds have already made two injury replacements and can hardly afford a third.
41st min: Wilfried Gnonto takes on Diogo Dalot as he enters the penalty area, and wins a corner. It’s cleared initially by Man United, but comes back at them in a scattered Leeds attack. Lisandro Martinez goes in hard on Wilfried Gnonto and it did look like got some of the ball. Gnonto is down receiving treatment, and looks to be in a lot of pain. That was a vicious tackle but did look to be legal.
38th min: The game has lacked chances over the past eight minutes, but it has not lacked its breakneck speed. The teams have traded breakaways, bypassing the opposition midfield with regularity. Back and forth we go. Weston McKennie gets a long talking to from the official after hacking Fred on the touchline, but Simon Hooper keeps his card in his pocket.
31st min: Chance, Man United! Marcel Sabitzer has another go, this time from outside the top of the 18-yard box, and forces Illan Meslier into an exceptional, one-handed diving save!
Manchester United are firmly on top now, and Leeds are barely hanging on. What a wild match this game is so far!
30th min: The official Simon Hooper calls Wilfried Gnonto for a foul on the edge of the penalty area out wide, having tripped Alejandro Garnacho. The entirety of Old Trafford — both sets of fans — are up in arms, with the home fans wanting a yellow card and the traveling fans believing that’s a soft call. The replay shows there’s essentially no contact and Garnacho dove. Gnonto protests his innocence but to no avail, although he gets away without a caution.
27th min: Chance, Man United! HEADED OFF THE LINE! Man United get Alejandro Garnacho in on goal which forces Illan Meslier off his line to contest, and while he doesn’t do enough to halt the chance, he gets just enough of a touch to give his defence an extra moment. That was all Max Wober needed to position himself on the goal mouth and head the eventual shot clear, on what otherwise was a wide open goal! How have Leeds gotten away with that???
20th min: Ouchhhhh. Pascal Struijk is walloped by a blistering Marcus Rashford shot right in the face. He’s down for some time on his stomach receiving treatment. He’s finally up on his knees and receives the concussion test from the physios. This has put a momentary lid on what was a track meet.
Struijk ultimately has to be replaced, the second Leeds player to go off injured in the opening half-hour. Junior Firpo comes in and takes over at full-back.
17th min: Chance, Man United! This continues to be played at 100 miles per hour, and Alejandro Garnacho misses by a HAIR! On a three-on-two break, a Bruno Fernandes cross finds Garnacho in acres of space, and rips it hard and low, with a shot that beats Illan Meslier but beats the post! SO close, he should score that one.
14th min: Chance, Man United! Oh WHAT a debut goal that would have been for Marcel Szbitzer! He crops up on the penalty spot and rifles a vicious scissor volley with space to shoot, but he’s challenged enough by Pascal Struijk and fires it over the crossbar. That was a good look!
11th min: Chance, Leeds! The visitors play a short corner and it’s sent into the mixer from deep. The ball deflects off a number of players challenging in the air, and falls right to Pascal Struijk at the far post who’s unmarked, but it surprised him off the deflection and he fails to control the ball off his chest. So close!
9th min: Leeds are taking this game right to Manchester United. Jack Harrison picks out Patrick Bamford in a very dangerous area in the penalty area, but he can’t receive the ball cleanly and trips with his back to goal, which allows Luke Shaw to recover and defend. This game is being played at breakneck speed, which suits Leeds.
6th min: Leeds are flying high but there’s a problem for Luis Sinisterra who is down with what appears to be a hamstring injury. He slowly walks off in serious pain as Leeds ready a substitute. Instead of Brenden Aaronson coming on, it’s Crysencio Summerville to take the spot out wide.
1st min: GOAL! LEEDS UNITED! WHAT A START TO THIS MATCH, LEEDS LEAD AT OLD TRAFFORD! It’s the young 19-year-old Wilfried Gnonto! Leeds press very high and win the ball through debutant Weston McKennie, and Gnonto lets it fly at the top of the penalty area, producing a stunning finish to stun the home crowd just seconds into the match! The goal stands after a brief VAR review for offside, and replay shows the decision was VERY tight but a legal play.

Man United vs Leeds United: Pre-match commentary, team news, analysis, more
5 mins to kick: Today is a massive opportunity for Weston McKennie to come in and not only impress on a personal level, but play next to a good friend and international teammate, and to help save a club from relegation. It’s quite the ask on his Premier League debut against a very strong opponent in a hostile environment, though.
17 mins to kick: Leeds United will move on from Jesse Marsch, and the results certainly warranted an extended review, but there’s a very legitimate argument to make that the timing of the decision to sack the American made little to no sense.
The club had just spent tens of millions in the transfer window on players who very clearly fit Marsch’s unique high-pressing style of play. Additionally, the underlying metrics suggested that an upwards correction was due for the club thanks to some poor finishing which isn’t exactly something the manager can change. I wrote about the odd timing of the decision at the link below, and the NBC crew in the United States discussed the change prior to the match.
MORE: Why was Jesse Marsch sacked by Leeds United? Some things don’t quite add up
30 mins to kick: New Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer may be one of the sneakiest signings of the winter transfer window, having essentially fallen into an upgrade accidentally. United only found a need for a new midfielder after Christian Eriksen went down injured for months near the end of January, and managed to bring over an excellent replacement from Bayern Munich.
Even Bayern striker Thomas Muller was surprised the German side let his teammate go. “The team was surprised. It happened very quickly,’ Muller told German publication Kicker. “I’m happy for Sabi that he’s moving to Manchester United, getting a chance to play there. Manchester is a huge name.”
48 mins to kick: Looks like an illness has gone around the Manchester United dressing room, which is why Aaron Wan-Bissaka misses out today. Handy that Diogo Dalot is ready to slot back in. Jadon Sancho also missing out due to his illness, although he’s able to make the bench after being sidelined over the weekend.
60 mins to kick: The lineups are in. There’s only one surprise for the Red Devils, as Diogo Dalot comes in at right-back for the in-form Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the latter not even in the squad and no immediate reason given. Dalot has been injured for some time, and Wan-Bissaka was exceptional in his place. Yet it appears that Dalot may get a chance to earn his spot back. Both will surely still see time given the upcoming fixture congestion with European play returning in a few weeks.
For Leeds, it’s a mixed bag for USMNT fans who are newly on board with the American influx at the club. Weston McKennie makes his first start for Leeds alongside his buddy Tyler Adams in midfield, after coming off the bench for his debut against Nottingham Forest last time out. However, Brenden Aaronson sits for the second straight match, a worrying sign for the wide man after he’d started every Premier League game for the club prior to sitting against Forest.
72 mins to kick: As rumors of a Manchester United sale continue to swirl, just now the Press Association has reported that the rumored Qatari entity involved in takeover discussions is indeed Qatari Sports Investments (QSI), the owners of PSG. Yet the report states they are keeping their options open and have no interest in a majority takeover of Manchester United.
90 mins to kick: Bruno Fernandes is a beast against Leeds United. His eight goal involvements in four games represent nearly 12 percent of his career Premier League goal involvements (and nearly 15 percent of his goals!) thus far in his time with Manchester United. He scored a hat-trick the last time Leeds visited Old Trafford.
103 mins to kick: Oops! Looks l like Jesse Marsch’s sacking was a little late for Manchester United to reprint all their matchday programs! 😂
120 mins to kick: Instead of naming a sole caretaker manager in the wake of the Jesse Marsch dismissal, Leeds have decided to go with the three-team approach. Assistants Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo, and Chris Armas will share the duties against Manchester United today.
40-year-old Skubala joined the team in the summer as under-21 head coach, having previously been working for the English FA. Gallardo, a former Spain youth international, joined Leeds in 2021 after spending numerous years coaching in Sevilla’s youth system. Armas, an American like Marsch, only joined the club a few weeks ago, having spent time on Ralf Rangnick’s staff at Manchester United after years coaching in Major League Soccer.
Man United vs Leeds United lineups & team news
Ten Hag’s injury list continues to grow at Old Trafford with the Dutch boss confirming Antony, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial are all ruled out of this match. Antony’s absence gives room for one of the young wingers to start, and it’s Alejandro Garnacho who gets the nod over Facundo Pellistri.
Brazil international Casemiro is suspended, as he begins a three-match ban after being sent off against Crystal Palace, with Marcel Sabitzer potentially coming in for his first Premier League start.
Diogo Dalot makes his return from injury, slotting in at right-back for Aaron Wan-Bissaka who filled in admirably while Dalot was sidelined.
Man United confirmed starting lineup (4-2-3-1): David de Gea (GK) — Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw — Fred, Marcel Sabitzer — Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford — Wout Weghorst.
Man United subs (9): Heaton (GK), Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, Mainoo, Pellistri, Iqbal, Elanga, Sancho.
Leeds are likely to be without Spain international Rodrigo Moreno until at least April, but Robin Koch is set to return from a ban, with USA international Weston McKennie pushing to start.
It remains to be seen whether winger Brenden Aaronson can find his way back into the starting lineup now that there’s been a change in management. He was sat for the first time this season against Nottingham Forest last time out, left on the bench as an unused substitute after starting every single league match to that point. He has competition from summer signing Luis Sinisterra and 19-year-old Wilfried Gnonto.
Max Wober starts at centre-back for the third straight game after joining mid-January, another player who profiles to Jesse Marsch’s style, making the managerial change all the more confusing.
Leeds United confirmed starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Illan Meslier (GK) — Luke Ayling, Max Wober, Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk — Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie — Luis Sinisterra, Jack Harrison, Wilfried Gnonto — Patrick Bamford.
Leeds United subs (9): Robles (GK), Firpo, Kristensen, Gyabi, Greenwood, Aaronson, Summerville, Joseph, Georginio.

Man United vs Leeds United betting odds & lines
Odds via BetMGM (USA), Sports Interaction (Canada), SkyBet (UK), and Neds (Australia).
Manchester United are heavy favourites to pile on the misery of Leeds United in the wake of Jesse Marsch’s dismissal, saddled with nearly 1/2 odds on the moneyline.
In fact, they’re expected to win by a significant margin, as oddsmakers think they’ll hit the 2.5 goal total all on their own. The over is a huge favorite, while both teams to score is a slight underdog, meaning the books believe that United could put three past Leeds in this match.
