March Madness 2023 live scores: Updated results, highlights from Friday’s Round 1 NCAA Tournament games

If the first sixteen games of the Round of 64 have taught us anything, it’s the unexpected. The games proved close, with some going to the end in an electrifying day of baskets.

And good news for college basketball fans, there are 16 games left.

Round 1 is always billed as the most unpredictable phase of the tournament. And many will be wondering what unanticipated sights await when they tap into today’s action.

Fans have the opportunity to see some of the nation’s brightest talent (Zach Edey, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Drew Time) as they seek to cement their legacy at their strong schools. Meanwhile, many of the country’s top mid-majors (Kent State, VCU, Iona) are hoping to add another kill to their wall while sewing their names into the tapestry of March Madness trouble.

All of which means what a time to be alive when the NCAA tournament airs.

With that, here are the latest results and highlights from today’s tournament series.

Round 1: Friday, March 17th

NCAA tournament results, highlights of Friday’s games

Gonzaga vs Grand Canyon

20:12 — Grand Canyon fires early on all cylinders! Antelope lead by 23:17.

Kentucky vs Providence

20:06 — Watch out for Corey Floyd! A wild dunk, but so far Kentucky has the advantage.

19:44 — Well how does that happen?

19:30 — It’s a size battle between Kentucky and Providence, with Bryce Hopkins facing off against his former team.

Purdue vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

21:08: — FDU wins!

20:40 — Fairleigh Dickinson will not go away!

20:30 — Just when you think Purdue is ready to retire…

19:33 — Purdue and FDU are now trading leads. It’s 28-27 Knights with just over a minute left in the first half.

19:12 — Fairleigh Dickinson has nothing to lose and that’s how the Knights have played so far.

UConn vs. Iona

18:57 — UConn beats Iona by 26 in the second half to run away with the latter. The Huskies face another Gaels on Sunday: St. Mary’s.

18:49 — We have network problems!

18:17 — UConn quickly asserts itself in the second half. An Iona win requires a comeback.

17:41 — Iona with a small half-time advantage and that’s one reason for it. The Gaels offensive is running out of steam.

17:08 — UConn and Iona fly early on offense. Fun matchup ahead if the Gaels can keep up.

Creighton vs. NC State

17:37 — That was fun…Creighton leads with three minutes left.

16:43 — Creighton reserve Mason Miller was just pulled off the field with a serious ankle injury.

16:13 — Out and running between Creighton and NC State. The Blue Jays got off to a better start.

State of Iowa vs. Pittsburgh

17:39 — That’s all Pitt now. Iowa State has just 30 points in 35 minutes and is 20 behind.

16:31 — The State of Iowa Strikes Back! Pitt is still leading but it will be a hard fought game going into the second half.

15:54 — Pitt with a DOMINANT start. It’s now 18-2.

Marquette versus Vermont

17:06 — Shaka Smart looks like he’s having as much fun as he did in 2011. Marquette is on his way to a date with Michigan State on Sunday.

16:30 — Kam Jones is wearing Marquette right now.

15:40 — Marquette leads Vermont at nine at halftime, but the Catamounts are trying their best to stay in the game.

St Mary’s vs VCU

15:48 — Offense was hard to come by at times but what a key shot here for the Gaels.

14:45 — As expected, nothing but defense from St. Mary’s and VCU early on. (6) TCU 72

Baylor vs. UCSB

15:04 — Baylor has begun to create some separation leading deep into the second half at nine.

14:10 — Don’t look now, but we might have another angry watch. This time, UCSB leads Baylor.(6) TCU 72

Xavier vs. Kennesaw State

14:57 — Jack Nunge saves the season for Xavier! The Musketeers survive and advance thanks to this clutch block.

14:43 — A little chippy here between teammates…

14:41 — Xavier came all the way back! Kennesaw State will need an answer fast.

14:01 — Kennesaw State pours it out! It’s a 13-point lead for the No. 14 seed!

13:33 — Kennesaw State leads by SEVEN at halftime. This will be a fun ending.

13:29 — The state of Kennesaw flies. lead owls.

13:23 — The Owls are scoring at a high rate, now up to 36 points with a handful of minutes remaining in the first half. Xavier follows at two.

13:08 — Kennesaw State is heating up!

12:53 — Xavier started with a 7-0 run against Kennesaw State. The Musketeers’ offensive looks as good as advertised.

Michigan State vs. USC

14:42 — All jokes from a very passionate Tom Izzo after Michigan State’s win.

14:04 — USC is trying to work its way out of a deficit, but it may be too late for the Trojans…

13:01 — USC takes the lead late in the first half, but the Spartans equalize just before halftime. We have a good brew here.

12:56 — USC returns serve…it’s a one-point play late in the first half.

12:46 — Hot start for the Spartans, shooting and playing solid defense. They lead 26-19.
