March Madness live bracket 2023: Updated NCAA field of 68, seeds, snubs revealed on Selection Sunday

One last set of rules must be settled before the 2023 NCAA tournament can take place: deciding once and for all which teams will be allowed to participate.

That means it’s Selection Sunday – a day when some teams are bursting at the seams with anticipation (or fear). For others, it’s just a matter of course before March Madness collapses.

As always, the field will consist of 68 teams – 32 automatic qualifiers and 36 schools. The first four games will reduce the tournament field to 64. Teams are seeded in one of four regions: East, Midwest, South, and West.

Which teams will make it? And among those, who is set too high or too low? Equally important: Which teams will be eliminated?

Sporting News will provide live updates as the teams and their seedings for each group are announced. Follow along as the full bracket for the 2023 NCAA tournament is unveiled:

NCAA Live Bracket Updates

6:36 p.m.: The top four teams in order are Oklahoma State, Rutgers, North Carolina and Clemson. The last four are Mississippi State, Pitt, Arizona State and Nevada. The Tar Heels are the first AP preseason No. 1 team to miss the NCAA tournament since it expanded to 64 teams.

6:35 p.m.: The East Region’s top four seeds are Purdue 2-Seed Marquette, who won her first-ever Big East Championship this season; 3-seed state of Kansas; and 4 seeds Tennessee.

6:35 p.m.: The last 1 seed is confirmed: Purdue, in the East Region. The Boilermakers, freshly spooked by Penn State in the Big Ten finals, play the winner of either Texas Southern or Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round.

6:25 p.m.: The third 1-seed of the tournament: Kansas, out west. Joining the Jayhawks in the top 4 is 2-seed UCLA, which had strong arguments for a 1-seed; 3-Seed Gonzaga, Winner of WCC (again); and 4-seed UConn. Quick aside, but the first round meeting between the Huskies and 11-man Iona will make for a great first round matchup.

6:18 p.m.: The Midwest region’s top four seeds: #1 Houston, #2 Texas, #3 Xavier, and #4 Indiana.

6:16 p.m.: One surprise in revealing the No. 2 overall pick: Houston, not Kansas, will be the top pick in the Midwest, meaning the Jayhawks won’t be able to play in Kansas City if they progress past March Madness opening weekend.

18:07: The top four Southern Region seeds: No. 1 overall seed Alabama; No. 2 Arizona (Pac-12 tournament winner); No. 3 Baylor, who won the 2021 NCAA tournament; and No. 4 Virginia, which fell to Duke in Saturday’s ACC Championship.

6:02 p.m.: Alabama is #1 overall in the tournament.

5:45 p.m.: All that’s left to do is wait for the mount to be unveiled. …

5:40 p.m.: No delay in Selection Sunday this year! Purdue beats Penn State 67-65 in a Big Ten thriller while Houston falls 75-65 in the AAC Championship. That shouldn’t knock the Cougars off the 1-seed line, although Purdue has to be happy with how Sunday went.

3:34 p.m.: A few notable conference championships remain to be played. These are the Big Ten championship, with potential NCAA Tournament 1-seed Purdue taking on Penn State; and the American Athletic Conference Finals, where another potential 1-seed in Houston takes on Memphis.

3:41 p.m.: Alabama beats Texas A&M 82-63 in the SEC Tournament Finals, avenging a loss to the Aggies in the regular-season finals and making a strong case for becoming the NCAA Tournament’s top overall champion.

3:30 p.m.: VCU beats Dayton in the Atlantic 10 finals, receiving the automatic bid in the process. It’s possible the Rams could have made it at large and given the A10 two tournament teams; As it stands now, they will be the only team at the conference to make it.

3:28 p.m.: Another automatic bid was secured when 2-seeded Princeton defeated Yale in the Ivy League Final to avenge last year’s title game loss and gain access to March Madness.
