Masters in Motion new series to showcase seniors in sport

The Prince George Citizen and Shaw Spotlight have partnered with a show featuring seniors in sports in Prince George.

When the opportunity to raise the voices of the seniors in Prince George in a big way found its way into my world, I had to make the most of it, and Masters in Motion BC was born.

The Prince George Citizen and Shaw Spotlight have partnered with the show and I host a show featuring seniors in sports in Prince George.

Through my regular appearances on Citizen and as part of a television series on Shaw Spotlight and the Masters in Motion BC YouTube channel, I will showcase the athletes who are competitive and passionate.

I think in part I’ve been presented with this incredible opportunity because I’m a champion athlete myself.

I throw a lot of stuff.

I compete in track and field and throw whatever apparatus I can get my hands on. It used to be five and now I throw six. There’s hammer, shot put, discus, javelin, weight throw, and most recently, super weight throw. I have held multiple BC records in my age group and currently hold the super weight throw and indoor weight throw records. I’m a good pitcher, but not great, so Canadian records will probably always be out of my reach, but I’ll still try to wrestle the gold from BC pitchers! Another reason I think I need to be a host is so I’m not afraid to fool myself, mispronounce myself, and otherwise make a fool of myself, but I think if I can laugh along when I mess up , then that’s fine. Getting the point across – showcasing great athletes who are older – is most important.

The show recently made its debut and features a curling team whose four members have a combined age of 305, but you’d never guess that given the speed and agility with which they approach their game.

The skip, Floyd Crowley, is 84 and runs throughout the game, at times covering distances of up to four kilometers on his pedometer.

Next we see two competitive weightlifters, both in their 50s!

Then we’ll soon meet a team of blind curlers who recently won the provincial championships, won their very first game against “sightlings” – as sighted people call them – at a recent game during the Seniors League, oh, because, did I mention? They are all 50+. They are going to the Western Canada Championships in March and could possibly go to the Canadian Championships from there to test their skills.

There’s a lot more people that I haven’t confirmed yet, but rest assured that we’ll be seeing so many different types of athletes, and each and every one will be a senior doing their best to age healthily and grow stay active until they just can’t anymore.

And don’t worry, I’ll try to stop that annoying nod on the next show! Live and learn!

If you are a senior or member of a senior sports team and would like to be featured in both the newspaper and the Shaw Spotlight, please email me at [email protected] and we will see what we can do to help to achieve this happen.
