Microsoft adds more language support for live captions in latest Windows 11 preview build
what you need to know
- Windows 11 Build 25300 is now available for Insiders on the Dev Channel.
- It offers new languages for live subtitles feature
- There’s also an experimental snap-dropdown UI that appears under window controls.
Microsoft is back with a new Windows 11 preview build for Insiders to download and try on the Dev Channel. Today’s build is 25300 and mostly contains improvements and bug fixes under the hood. There are a few notable changes and additions to the interface, and these relate to live subtitles and snapshots.
First, live captions are getting support for new languages after initially only launching with US English support. New supported languages include Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and other English dialects.
Also new in this build is an experimental UI for the dropdown menu that appears when the mouse cursor hovers over the maximize button in app windows. These experiments include showing the app icon in the highlighted snap area and including text that says “Snap this window” to make it clearer to the user what this UI is doing.
Here is the full changelog for build 25300:
Windows 11 build 25300 changelog
- Live subtitles help everyone and people who are deaf or hard of hearing to read live subtitles in their native language. The first release of Live Subtitles in Windows 11 2022 Update provided subtitles in English with a focus on English (US). In this build, Live Subtitles can also provide subtitles in Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish and other English dialects. We will add more languages as they become available.
- We’re trying different treatments for snap layouts (opens in new tab) with Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. We’re exploring ways to improve discoverability and usage of the Snap layouts, such as: B. Reducing the hover time required to invoke the flyout when hovering over the Max/Restore button in an app’s title bar. In addition to some other tweaks, you’ll notice that some treatments also indent the icon of the app window you’re working in and add a descriptive title. If you see any of these treatments, let us know what you think. As a reminder, it’s normal for us to try different concepts in the Dev Channel for feedback.
- Changing voice input synchronization settings, Automatic punctuation And Voice input launcher, on all devices signed in with the same Microsoft account introduced with build 25227, is now available to all Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel. You can toggle this function via Ideas > accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences > Accessibility This currently only works with Microsoft accounts, AAD support will follow later.
- Updated Settings > Apps > Start to make it easier to access more information about the listed apps.
- Right-clicking a Win32 app in Start or searching for the app and selecting Uninstall now takes you to Settings to uninstall the app.
- Improved the upgrade experience to the new Windows subsystem for the Linux Store app (mentioned in build 25272) to now prompt for installation when wsl.exe is invoked.
- We fixed the underlying issue related to combase.dll that was causing crashes with multiple apps using GetKnownFolder APIs after upgrading to Build 25290, including Notepad and Windows Terminal for IME users. This issue is also believed to be the root cause of some Insiders noticing that certain File Explorer actions take minutes to complete in these builds.
- We fixed the issue resulting in rendering issues and difficulty using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
- Fixed an issue where some users had trouble authenticating to corporate websites that require Integrated Windows Authentication.
- First introduced in build 25247, the ability to show seconds in the taskbar clock should return after the build 25300 update if it disappeared for you after the build 25295 update last week.
- Fixed an issue that caused the taskbar to clip after resolution changes.
- We fixed an issue where hovering over app icons in the taskbar could unexpectedly switch window focus.
- As a result of fixing the issue that caused third-party widgets to be solved when signed in with a Microsoft account on multiple Windows 11 devices, the latest Widgets update in the Dev Channel will solve third-party widgets. Insiders will need to go back to their widget board and re-pin those widgets. If you’re still seeing issues with widgets resolving unexpectedly, please submit feedback.
- The link for “Find more widgets” in the widget chooser is currently no longer broken and will point to the store collection here.
- We’re starting by introducing a fix for an issue where the IME candidate window and IME toolbar were sometimes not showing or being cut off.
- Dragging and dropping files and folders across tabs should work again.
- Process names entered in the search field should no longer be unexpectedly checked for spelling.
- Fixed some issues with Narrator reading content in Task Manager.
- Fixed an issue where dropdowns in settings might not match your currently selected theme.
- When using search on the App History page, the results should no longer suddenly disappear.
- When you open the “Default Home” drop-down menu in Settings, the drop-down menu should now disappear when you click on the Task Manager window.
- Dragging the window over the search box area should now work (like other areas of the title bar).
- Fixed an issue where no confirmation dialog was displayed when ending processes in the Details tab.
- Increasing the text scale should no longer cause a “Show More” button to appear with no content.
- When you perform a search and then press the down arrow, the keyboard focus should now move from the search box to the results.
- If you have a contrast theme enabled and you select one of the rows on the Processes page, that row should now show that it’s selected.

- Fixed an issue where Narrator focus would not return to the Quick Settings window correctly when using the Back button on the Cast page.
