Less than a month before Voting Day, SPIN collected information from Elections BC and the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality on who can vote, what documents are required and how to apply for an absentee ballot.

Who can vote?

In BC municipal elections, voters can qualify as either “resident voters” or “non-resident voters”.

For both categories, the voter must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age and not disqualified from voting by the Local Government Act or other enactment.

A resident voter must have lived in Sun Peaks for at least six months prior to the date of registration. The number of eligible voters per household is unlimited. That means if multiple potential voters live in or rent the same property, everyone can vote as long as each person lives in Sun Peaks for at least six months.

A non-resident voter need not reside in Sun Peaks, but must have owned property in Sun Peaks for at least 30 days and be a resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to the date of registration.

If a property has multiple owners, only one person can vote for that property. This means, for example, if people are co-owners of a vacation home, only one of them can vote in the Sun Peaks municipal election as long as they meet the additional criteria. A voter who owns more than one property still only has one vote.

Registration takes place at the time of voting. All eligible voters must provide two documents proving their identity and place of residence, one of which must contain the applicant’s signature. Examples include, but are not limited to, a BC driver’s license, social security card, utility bill, property tax statement, car insurance certificate, or citizenship card.

In addition, non-resident voters must also provide proof of ownership. If the property is owned by more than one person, the owner wishing to vote must have the written consent of a majority of the other owners.

Corporations or corporations are not entitled to vote, and no one can vote on behalf of a property owned or partially owned by a corporation.

If an individual resides in one community and owns property in another BC community, they are eligible to vote in both respective communities.

Residents living in Whitecroft or Heffley Louis Creek Valley are not eligible to vote in Sun Peaks municipal elections because they live outside the village’s municipal boundaries.

How do I vote?

The general voting day is Saturday October 15th. Voting will take place at the Sun Peaks Center from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m

Extended voting will also be available on Wednesday, October 5 at the same time and location.

For those who will not be in Sun Peaks on these dates, absentee voting is an option.

Election packages can be sent to any address or picked up at the municipal office. However, the municipality will only send the packages until October 2nd. The voter is then responsible for completing the ballot and returning it to the municipality by the end of voting day on October 15.

Requests for absentee voting must be addressed to Nicky Jonsson, the Chief Election Officer. Applications must include the voter’s full name, mailing address, and street address or a legal description. It can be mailed, faxed or emailed to Jonsson at:
