MSCHF’s Big Red Boots Served as Inspiration for Mei Kawajiri’s Latest 3D Nail Design — See Photos
There are always The Trend that was floating around during NFYW – the one that seemed to explode overnight and is either being worn or talked about by everyone in the know. In 2023, it’s MSCHF’s Big Red Boots, a cartoonishly sized pair of shoes resembling something Astro Boy or a video game character would wear.
While MSCHF’s Big Red Boots originally started out as a “social experiment” for the cheeky art collective’s brand, they’ve actually found favor with fashionistas and celebrities, and both have become a meme And also a real trend. Matching this, the Big Red Boots now have it Also become a manicure thanks to nail artist Nails by Mei, who created an ode to the funny shoes that make us laugh.
Mei, who creates stunning nail art for celebs, brands and editorial shoots, shared her take on the trend on Instagram with a video of her boot nails. “Everyone knows THE BIG RED BOOTS,” she wrote. “How about the big red boot nails?” In fact, she crafted two red mini boots on her middle and ring fingers, just like the viral MSCHF shoes. If you scroll through the gallery, you’ll see that Mei chiseled the boots onto a nail extension, which she then applied to her fingers in a goofy, tongue-in-cheek nod to the scarlet shoes.
According to Mei, she shaped her nails while waiting for Rihanna’s performance at the Super Bowl, as one does. The shocking scarlet hue pairs perfectly with Rih’s all-red Loewe look, merging two of the year’s biggest fashion and pop culture moments so far in one hilarious, eye-catching manicure.
Mei isn’t the only one who associates nail art with MSCHF’s Big Red Boots. While not as wearable as Meis, celebrity nail artist Gracie J was also inspired by the viral boots. In a truly mesmerizing video, she created a mini sculpt of the shoe made entirely out of nail material. (Seriously, it’s magical.)
Just like the shoes themselves, the Big Red Boots Nails aren’t the most Practical option in the world and probably won’t catch on at your local nail salon, but they make for a great Instagram post or street style moment.
