Houston @ Navy

Current records: Houston 3-3; Navy 2-4

What you should know

The Houston Cougars have had a week off and are no doubt ready to get back on the field. They will hit the road for the second straight week as they head to Jack Stephens Field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday noon ET. With a total of 972 yards of offense in their previous games, we can expect a quick game.

Two weeks ago, Houston won a matchup that couldn’t have been closer, slipping past the Memphis Tigers 33-32. The win came thanks to a sharp surge after the first quarter to overcome a 14-to-nothing deficit. Cougars QB Clayton Tune did his thing, passing three TDs and 366 yards on 57 attempts, in addition to a rushing touchdown. That was Tune’s first attempt for 300 yards this season.

Houston’s defense was also present as it passed the Tigers’ offensive line to sack the QB four times for a total loss of 21 yards. It was a group effort with five people contributing.

Meanwhile, the Navy Midshipmen were close to stealing the win, but they took the “L” against the SMU Mustangs 40-34. A bright spot for the midshipmen was the play of QB Tai Lavatai, who passed on 20 tries for two TDs and 136 yards and added rushing for two TDs and 121 yards. That nimble footwork stands out as Lavatai hit the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time this season. Lavatai’s sharp performance also elevated his single-game rushing touchdown for the season.

This next contest is expected to be tight as the Cougars walk away with just a 3-point favorite. Those who got lucky with them against the spread two weeks ago should wait to place bets this time as the team has yet to string together consecutive wins against the spread.

Houston’s win put them 3-3, while the Midshipmen’s loss pulled them back to 2-4. A few defensive numbers to keep an eye on before kick-off: Houston enters the contest with 18 sacks, good for the 25th-best in the nation. Navy comes into play with 89.5 with the seventh fewest rushing yards allowed per game in the nation.
