  • Date: Saturday February 18th
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET | 5 p.m. PT

The NBA All-Star Skills Challenge is the first event of All-Star Saturday Night at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. The Skills Challenge, which begins just after 8 p.m. ET, precedes the 3-Point Contest and the Slam Dunk Contest.

NBA All-Star Skills Challenge format

In its second year, the Skills Challenge will consist of three teams of three players competing in a four-round competition. The two teams with the most points in the first three rounds advance to the final.

Here is a breakdown of each round:

All players on each team participate in a timed relay where they have to complete a course. Each player has 30 seconds to shoot from five different points between 10 and 30 feet from the edge, and players cannot repeat the same shot back-to-back.

Shots from each spot have different values ranging from one to five points. Individual player scores are added together to determine the team score.

The team with the highest score wins round 1 and gets 100 challenge points.

Teams compete individually, with each team having 30 seconds to earn points. All players participate together in a passing competition in which they complete passes to three oversized moving targets that vary in size and distance from the players.

Each team must make at least one pass attempt to each target, and individual players cannot pass to the same target in a row. Completed passes to each goal are worth two, four, or six points.

The team with the highest score wins round 2 and gets 100 challenge points.

All players on each team participate in a timed relay in which each player must complete the course consisting of these five skills in this order:

  1. Throw an exit pass from the baseline at a moving target
  2. Dribble across the court through three moving pylons
  3. Take a quick shot down the lane
  4. Make a 3-pointer from the corner against an automated defender
  5. Dribble on the opponent’s goal and make a basket

The team with the fastest time wins round 3 and gets 200 challenge points.

  • Round 4 – Half Field Shot

The two teams with the highest scores from rounds 1 to 3 advance to the final round. These teams compete individually, and all players on each team attempt to take a half field shot.

Team 1 sets the time to hit with a shot made or a countdown of the clock (maximum 90 seconds).

The team that makes a half-court shot the fastest wins the Skills Challenge. In the event of a tie, the teams repeat the final round.
