NBA to retire Bill Russell’s number league-wide: Which current NBA players wear No. 6?

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association announced Thursday that the late great Bill Russell will retire his league-wide No. 6 jersey.

Along with Jackie Robinson (No. 42) and Wayne Gretzky (No. 99), Russell is the only player in the history of United States professional sports, along with Jackie Robinson (No. 42) and Wayne Gretzky (No. 99), whose jersey numbers are in a were withdrawn throughout the league.

Although no new players can wear the number 6, players who currently wear the jersey number – notably LeBron James – wear is “inhabited” and may continue to wear that number if they wish.

While these players can still wear Russell’s shirt number in his honor, don’t be surprised if some players change their number this season.
