Western Sydney University welcomes the NSW Government’s announcement of $16.7 million from the WestInvest scheme to establish a Sports and Health Center of Excellence at Campbelltown Stadium.
The Campbelltown City Council-led university is excited to be a key partner in the $33 million project, which will provide a wide range of programs in exercise science, health and well-being, community development and outreach, and development pathways for top athletes in the region .
Western Sydney University will seek to establish a Health and Medical Center within the Center of Excellence to provide a wide range of services including general medicine, allied health services, medical imaging and sports administration. The vision of the university is to promote participation in sports, education, health and well-being in a community hub model.
Crucially, the Health and Medical Center will offer hands-on clinical internships and training opportunities for students across the university in fields such as medicine, nursing and midwifery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, traditional Chinese medicine and exercise science.
It will also provide a major boost to elite sports partners and local sports communities by enhancing new talent and development paths, athlete welfare and community health.
Vice Chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover AO said the university is a leading advocate for the Greater Western Sydney region and proud to be involved in a project to improve the health of local communities.
“The Campbelltown Sports and Health Center of Excellence will be a world-class facility that will provide much-needed, additional comprehensive health services to the communities of Sydney South West – a fast-growing region facing many, often complex, health challenges,” Professor said Glover.
“Importantly, this center will offer an innovative delivery model that improves access and provides real health benefits for local residents, as well as bolstering on-campus training for future medical and health professionals who can stay and work in the area, thereby helping to relieve some of the Stresses that the healthcare system is exposed to.”
The Sport and Health Center of Excellence will be co-located with community partners such as Wests Tigers, Macarthur FC and South West Sydney Academy of Sport and will help develop local sport professionals and future athletes and serve as a center for sporting excellence nationally and internationally .
Professor Glover said the university’s world-leading health and exercise science research expertise will be embedded in the center, strengthening collaboration between the university, industry and the community and having an impact on the real world.
“Western Sydney University looks forward to working with the NSW Government and Campbelltown City Council to move forward with the next stages of planning to achieve our vision for this project – an excellent opportunity for job creation, industry collaboration and a deep and enduring engagement with the communities of South West Sydney,” he said.
