Newcastle vs. Man City live score, updates, highlights & lineups from the Premier League showdown at St James’ Park
Manchester City have made a flawless start to defending their Premier League title.
Erling Haaland made headlines in the opening weekend with both goals on his Premier League debut at West Ham, while Bournemouth were torn apart by a more recognizable ensemble performance from Pep Guardiola’s men.
Newcastle have taken four points from the first six offered and, like City, Eddie Howe’s side are yet to concede this season.
Progress under Howe has been considerable since the Saudis took over Newcastle but they still delivered 4-0 and 5-0 to City last season.
The Sporting News follows the game live and provides live score updates and commentary.

Newcastle vs Man City live updates, highlights from the Premier League clash at St James’ Park
15 minutes to kick-off: Eddie Howe tells Sky Sports he doesn’t want Newcastle to be passive and sitting deep while ceding possession to City. That’s much easier said than done, of course, but the hosts will be keen to take their chances with a raucous crowd in their seats.
30 minutes until kick-off: Hmmm, a possible injury concern for City in warm-up. Could Phillips be ready for his first Premier League start for his new club?
The players are warming up. After a few minutes, Rodri consulted one of the city officials and had some sort of gel rubbed on his hamstring. Maybe something to keep an eye on, or maybe nothing #mcfc #ManCity pic.twitter.com/zCirxuUTVH

40 minutes until kick-off: Silva was successful in midfield last season and only appeared as a false nine in the attacking line. City obviously have a very real nine now, but when Erling Haaland gets going expect him to be flanked by Silva and Foden. Certainly since the departures of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling at the break of the season, these two are Guardiola’s most effective and dynamic pressers from the front and provide hand insurance to keep Haaland from getting into the groove of what’s required off the ball.
55 minutes until kick-off: Eddie Howe stays with the same Newcastle XI that drew 0-0 at Brighton last weekend.
Unchanged. 💪

1 hour until kick-off: Guardiola hands Bernardo Silva his first start of the season in City’s top three alongside Phil Foden and Erling Haaland. Ruben Dias falls to the City bench while John Stones supports Nathan Ake at centre-back while Jack Grealish is out through injury. New signing Sergio Gomez is one of the substitutes.

1 hr 20 mins to kick-off: Although, in fairness, West Ham’s away game on the opening weekend of the season looked like a tricky proposition for City right up until kick-off. Pep Guardiola’s side are pretty good at turning such situations into overtaking maneuvers and Newcastle’s first aim will be to avoid such a fate. We have team news in about 20 minutes,
1 hour 40 minutes until kick-off: Is this game on the way to becoming one of the great games of English football? Newcastle, fresh from the Saudi takeover, were beaten 4-0 and 5-0 by City last season but optimism and momentum around Eddie Howe’s side continues to grow. After a more sane than fancy summer on the transfer market, they can give the champions their toughest test of the season so far.

Newcastle vs Man City predicted lineups
fitness doubts around Emil Kraft and Matt Targett Give Howe decisions he needs to make as a full-back where Kieran Trippiers Versatility could use him at left-back. Guardiola has used left-footed players Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez on City’s right flank so far this season so a trick like that would add up.
Expected starting line-up for Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope (GK)—Krafth, Burn, Schar, Trippier—Willock, Guimaraes, Joelinton—Almiron, Wilson, Saint-Maximin
Calvin Phillips and Cole Palmer have both overcome problems and are expected to take a seat alongside new signings on the City bench Sergio Gomez. It’s likely Guardiola will stick with a similar XI to those who beat West Ham and Bournemouth, especially now Bernardo Silva’s future no longer feels like a hot topic
Expected starting line-up for Manchester City (4-3-3): Ederson (GK) – Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo – De Bruyne, Rodri, Gundogan – Foden, Haaland, Grealish
