NHL trade deadline 2023 live updates: Deals, news and analysis as window closes with Van Riemsdyk not moving
Flyer ready?
Flyers have not yet confirmed they are done announcing trades, but Chuck Fletcher will be speaking to the media in 10 minutes.
So it sure sounds like they’re done.
Good.

Ducks received a fourth-round pick for John Klingberg in 2025
Joe Smith reports that John Klingberg’s return in 2025 is a quarter, Andrej Sustr and the rights of Nikita Nesterenko, with the Ducks retaining 50% of Klingberg. That’s… not great, especially for a guy who was basically just signed to trade on the deadline.
That being said, what can you really do if you are Pat Verbeek? Klingberg has been terrible this year, as has pretty much everyone on the Ducks roster. Its value torpedoed. Nobody gave you a first for the guy. I guess you could reframe it to say he never made a good pass, or the Ducks didn’t put him in a position to succeed, or whatever. But to this day, getting anything for him at all feels good. That’s how far his stock has fallen.

NHL Trading Qualities: Sabers fills a need with Jordan Greenway, Wild adds Oskar Sundqvist
The shops
Get Saber: Forward Jordan Greenway
Get wild: 2023 second round pick (by VGK), 2024 fifth round pick
Get wild: Striker Oskar Sundqvist
Get Red Wings: 2024 fourth-round pick
Dom Luszczyszyn: If you’re a Sabers fan who’s disappointed that Jordan Greenway, a forward with seven points in just 45 games this year, was the big hit, it doesn’t have to be. Buffalo is good at scoring goals, the Sabers don’t need goals or finishing talent. That’s not why they acquired Greenway.
What the Sabers need is defensive power, and plenty of it. That’s Greenway’s bread and butter and that’s going to continue this season even if his offensive game is completely falling apart. Greenway was third fiddle in the GREEF line, Minnesota’s vaunted shutdown trio that terrorized opponents defensively in recent seasons. Over the past two seasons, the Wild have conceded 0.12 fewer expected goals per 60 with Greenway on the ice and only two expected goals conceded.

Wild loading on Swedish players
During this trading period, the Minnesota Wild added Marcus Johansson, Oskar Sundqvist, Gustav Nyquist and John Klingberg. The Klingberg and Sundqvist trades took place on Friday, the record date. The Wild already had Sweden, Jonas Brodin, Joel Eriksson Ek and Filip Gustavsson
Nyquist spoke on Thursday The Athletics Michael Russo on how many Swedes were in Minnesota and how nice it is to be on a team with so many compatriots.
“It feels like the old Detroit days to me,” Nyquist said. “When I came to Detroit, I think we had nine or ten Swedes at some point. So almost back to that crowd again, which means…it’s going to be great. It will be fun.”

Could the Flames just let Nick Ritchie wear the same shirt number and keep his booth in the dressing room? Would save me printing a new jersey, I’m sure.

Brother-for-brother trade
The Flames reportedly traded Connor Mackey and Brett Ritchie for Troy Stecher and Nick Ritchie. Yes, Nick and Brett are brothers. That rules. I have no opinion on whether this trade is good or bad for either team or in between. But a brother-for-brother trade? Impressively.
It’s going to take me some time to figure out where that sits in NHL brother moments, alongside the Drydens facing each other, the Primeau fight or Bryan Murray being fired and replaced by Terry. But it rocks.

Deadline fireworks were hard to find
As I write this it is seven minutes past the deadline and the TSN Deadline Show is debating whether there is any reason the TSN Deadline Show still exists. If that doesn’t sum up the day, I don’t know what does.

So we have our answer to James van Riemsdyk
There is no trade, neither to Detroit nor anywhere else.
Uff. This is a disaster for the Flyers.
Note that I’m not saying it’s a disaster for Chuck Fletcher because we don’t know what happened to the Wings. This can’t be his fault, although this is the danger of leaving things until the deadline is in sight.
But yeah, a terrible team comes to the deadline and fails to sell any of the veterans, not even the obvious loaner. Brutally.

A flyer trade (no, not this one)
The Flyers traded center Patrick Brown to the Senators for a sixth-round pick.
Brown, 30, has two goals and five assists in 43 games this season.

Why the Sabers traded for Jordan Greenway
While Don Granato and Kevyn Adams have preached patience, the Sabers saw an opportunity to find a player who can help now and in the future. Jordan Greenway has two more years under contract for $3 million after that deal, so this isn’t just a lease. Last week, Alex Tuch suffered an injury that will sideline him for several weeks, leaving Buffalo in dire need of help on the wing. Jack Quinn jumped for Tuch’s spot on the top line, but the Sabers had to fill that spot in the middle six. Greenway should be able to do that. With the Sabers in the middle of the playoff race, this could provide the push forward they need.

What’s up with a potential James van Riemsdyk trade?
OK, we’re getting a late intrigue involving James van Riemsdyk. It was reported that he went to Detroit. Now we are told he is not. huh?
That could mean a lot, because insiders don’t just make things up. Maybe a deal fell through. Maybe the league shot something on a trade call. Maybe the Wings withdrew at the last second (or a third team?). Or maybe the Flyers got a better offer at the last second.
The question now is: where is JVR going? And if it’s nowhere because the Wings were the target and it fell apart just short of the finish line, whoops…

Why the Flyers weren’t active before the NHL trade deadline
How does Vladislav Namestnikov fit into the Jets?
Vladislav Namestnikov is a dependable, 30-year-old forward in the bottom six with good defensive action and 15 points in 57 games this season – just the kind of forward Rick Bowness can count on in his third or fourth row. It should be noted that Bowness and Namestnikov knew each other well from their time together in Tampa Bay, where Namestnikov broke into the NHL and had some strong offensive numbers in his first four seasons with the Lightning. They were reunited at the close of last season in Dallas, with Namestnikov in 15 regular-season games and seven more in the playoffs.

Who cares about the salary cap?
One thing I find amazing about this management team is how little they seem to care about the salary cap. Granted, flat cap surprised them, but after three two offseasons (and over the past week) it felt like having EVERY cap room was a liability.
