THIS DAY IN SPORT

1896: George Lohmann conceded eight wickets for seven runs as England outplayed South Africa for 30 in Port Elizabeth. The innings total remained the lowest in a Test game in nearly 60 years.

1907: American jockey Johnny Longden is born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. In 1943 he drove Count Fleet to victory at the US Triple Crown – the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes. He had a 40-year equestrian career during which he rode 6,032 winners and became the first man to surpass the 6,000 mark.

1925: Wigan beat Cumberland amateur side Flimby and Fothergill 116-0 in a Rugby League Northern Cup match.

1984: British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won Olympic gold in Sarajevo for their dance interpretation of Ravel’s Bolero, earning perfect 6.0 scores from all 12 judges.

1989: Peter Scudamore became the third jockey in the National Hunt to ride 1,000 winners, after Stan Mellor and John Francome.

2006: Mike Ruddock resigned as Wales manager just 11 months after leading the team to their first Grand Slam triumph in 27 years. Ruddock cited family reasons for his decision.

2010: Dick Francis, the best-selling author and driver of Devon Loch at the 1956 Grand National, died aged 89.

2012: Rangers appointed administrators Duff and Phelps as the extent of the club’s serious financial problems became clear. The Scottish club were subsequently deducted 10 points before going into liquidation and regrouping in the Third Division.

2013: South African Paralympic and Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend after she was shot dead at his home.

2020: Manchester City were banned from European club competition for two years by UEFA and fined €30m – or £24.9m – after they were found to have committed “serious breaches” of club licensing and financial regulations -Fair play regulations had committed. The ban was later lifted and the fine reduced to €10m (£9m) by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
