“People were mad about it, I couldn’t believe it; they were like you shouldn’t wear that” – Serena Williams on sporting a catsuit at 2018 French Open

Serena Williams has long been known for experimenting with her Grand Slam outfits. Over the years she has presented some of the most iconic looks in fashion history. In a recent video with Vogue, Williams opened up about the controversy surrounding her 2018 French Open outfit.

The 2018 Roland Garros was Williams’ first Grand Slam tournament since the birth of her daughter Olympia. She focused on the catsuit look and was happy with that.

“I’ve worn catsuits, but I’ve never worn a catsuit that long. (So) that was really cool where I wore a body part like that,” she said.

However, it did not go down well with French Open authorities. The 23-time Major winner was understandably taken aback by her attitude.

“People were mad about it, I couldn’t believe it. They were like you shouldn’t wear that. Well, not the people, the French Open were kind of upset about it,” she recalled.

The 40-year-old revealed she had to argue with Paris authorities, telling them she had to wear the catsuit after Olympia was born for health reasons.

“I had to wear it with my blood because of compression issues, so I had to have a full compression because this time Olympia was six months I think,” Williams revealed, adding, “I told them that you don’t understand, this is for.” my health, I have to carry that somehow and they understood when I said that. They weren’t very happy about it, but they understood.”

During the controversy, the president of the French tennis federation, Bernard Guidecelli, had said that such clothing would no longer be accepted.

“I think we went too far sometimes. For example, the combination of Serena Williams will no longer be accepted this year. You have to respect the game and the place,” he said.

Serena Williams recently appeared at a virtual meetup hosted by Wondermind where she spoke about how she supports her mental health.

Co-founded by Selena Gomez, Wondermind aims to decomratize and destigmatize mental health for everyone. Speaking to Gomez, Williams admitted she’s learned to switch off and put herself first.

“For me, mental fitness is really about learning how to switch off,” Williams said. “You know, I did this years ago, before mental health was on everyone’s lips. It was more like, ‘Okay, I’m going to switch off today’. Just subconsciously, that was something I’ve always done. And now that I know it’s so important to put yourself first, especially mentally, I always have shutdown moments.”
