Plymouth returned to the top of League One after a thrilling home win over Portsmouth.

Portsmouth could have taken the lead when Joe Morrell’s shot went over goal and goalkeeper Callum Burton was beaten.

But there was no one to add the finishing touches and Argyle countered, with Sam Cosgrove scoring. The striker struck after Pompey goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi failed to save Callum Wright’s sharp shot.

Pompey midfielder Marlon Pack closed in with a bold long-range lob after 36 minutes when he spotted Burton from his line, but the ball flew just over the bar.

Di’Shon Bernard had to be sharp to clear Wright’s goal-bound header off the line early in the second half when Plymouth pressed for a second.

And that came in the 70th minute through substitute Finn Azaz. The Aston Villa loanee jumped the offside trap before calmly slotting the ball deep past Oluwayemi in the corner.

Pompey scored in the 79th minute when a corner caught an Argyle defender and sent substitute Reeco Hackett home.

But as the visitors pressed for an equaliser, Hardie’s cool finish of strike partner Cosgrove’s pass on the counter sealed victory.
