The Portland Winterhawks are trying to go 8-0 after their toughest game of the season last Saturday, a 5-4 shootout win over Kamloops at the Memorial Coliseum. Portland trailed 4-1 in the 2nd half, with two goals from Robbie Fromm-Delorme and an equalizer from Kyle Chyzowski. Then, after a goalless overtime, James Stefan and Marcus Nguyen scored on penalties to give Portland the extra point.
Fromm-Delorme and Chyzowski were called up to Portland’s senior squad later in the week, along with Jack O’Brien and potential-returning Gabe Klassen, who was named team captain. Klassen scored 7 goals in the first 3 games of the season before retiring with an upper-body injury. He’s been day by day for a while; This is the game pointed to as its likely return.
If they get through this game, they have three home games in a row where they will be favorites, so there is one Chance, although it’s still far-fetched that they could go home 11-0 against the conference’s best team, the Seattle Thunderbirds.

You’d think they would have waited to announce Klassen as captain if he hadn’t come back in this game.
Counting the shootout winner, Nguyen has had the winning goal in two straight games.
Johnson scored his first WHL goal last Saturday.
Stefan has points in all 5 of his games. O’Brien has points in 4 straight and 6 of 7.
Lead forward: Fromm-Delorme (11 points/7 games), O’Brien (9/7), Klassen (7/3), Stefan (7/5), Chyzowski (6/7)

The Winterhawks traded 29-year-old defenseman Kurtis Smythe to Medicine Hat for an 8th-round pick. Smythe had played well, but Portland has two young defenders, Rhett Ravndahl and Alex Thompson, who need playing time, so Smythe was caught in the numbers game. Eight defenders in the squad is pretty standard.
Leading Defenders: Cagnoni (8/7), Sotheran (6/7), Ryder Thompson (3/6).

The Ams celebrated their biggest win of the year on Friday night, a 6-3 home win over the Everett Silvertips. Trailing 3-2 after 2 periods, Tri-City scored 4 goals in 6.5 minutes to start 3rd game and finish the game. Goalkeeper Tomas Suchanek usually hits shots in his 40s; He only hit 36 in that game, and barring a stretch in the last half of the 1st set, he would have been lower.
Ethan Ernst scored 2 goals (although one could go to Parker Bell), and Deagan McMillan, Bell, Jake Sloan and Elouann Lemonnier had one goal each. All 6 of their goals were pretty much scored from the edge of the crease; They came to the net and hit rebounds or tips. So Portland’s defense will have some work to do.

16 | 13-Jordan Gavin (18) 12-Nick Anisimovicz (5) 88-Camerin Cardona (2) |
It’s the second 2-goal game in a row for Ernst if it holds.
Gavin illuminates it as a 16-year-old. Assists on Friday were secondary but he had a few other chances, hitting the bar on one.
Luypen is out long-term which is why they still have 4 20-year-olds left.
Lead forward: Ernst (11/8), Gavin (11/9), Sloan (10/9), Belton (7/9), Mechura (6/9).

A side that has been under a lot of pressure for some time held their own on Friday.

goalkeeper | |
---|---|
19 | 1-Tomas Suchanek (50) |
18 | 35-Nick Avakyan (30) |
Suchanek actually had a bad game on Friday; The three goals were all doubtful. He usually pulls TC over the line, but this time it was the opposite. You’d think he’d start. If he doesn’t, that really changes the outlook.
Save percent: Suchanek .917, Avakyan .810.
