Preview, schedule, and how to watch skeet and trap stars compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier

At the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Shotgun Championships 2022, 633 athletes from 77 nations will compete in Croatia for more than just global titles.

Direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be offered at the Osijek event, with 16 quota places up for grabs in each event – 8 in trap, 8 in skeet.

In addition to four individual competitions, each with four Olympic quota places – skeet men, skeet women, trap men and trap women – there are also world championship titles in team competitions men and women (three shooters each) and mixed team (one woman and one man) in skeet and trap, which could be crucial for Olympic selection as there is only one full season of World Cup events left before the 2024 Games.

Most of the top shooters will be in attendance, including many world and Olympic champions and medalists, as well as several newly crowned continental champions from the 2022 European Shotgun Championships.

When and where will the ISSF World Championships Shotgun 2022 take place?

The 2022 ISSF World Championships for Skeet and Trap will be held in Osijek, in the Central European country Croatia.

Shooting Range Pampas is the venue. It has 5 combined ranges for Trap/Double Trap/Skeet.

To catch Competition for elite senior shooters is from Monday 26 to Friday 30 September 2022.

Trap stars in action at the 2022 World Shotgun Championship

Jiří Lipták, The man who won the men’s trap gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and recently clinched the European title is a starting list in Croatia and will be the man to beat. His teammate from the Czech Republic is also in action David Kostelecky, who added silver to his 2008 gold in Tokyo, and British Trap medalist at the Men’s Olympics Matthew Coward Holley since the entire podium from the individual competition is represented at the last Olympic Games.

Another reigning Olympic champion Zuzana Rehák-Štefečeková will be representing Slovakia in the women’s trap event. Australia’s Olympic gold medalist from Rio 2016 Catherine Skinner will also be there. The Aussies also offer a mixed trap pair James Willett and Laetisha Scanlan aiming to defend their World Championship title won at the 2019 edition in Lonato del Garda, Italy.

They will compete against Spain’s Olympic gold medalists in the mixed trap Fatima Galvez and Alberto Fernandez. Gianmarco Berti and Alexandra Perilli, who became San Marino’s first Olympic silver medalists when they finished second in the Tokyo 2020 mixed trap team event, will also be in attendance. Perilli also holds individual bronze and is aiming for her first global title.

Watch out for Italy in the team competitions – they won continental gold medals for both men’s and women’s teams in Larnaca. Olympic Christina Vitali is the only shooter from those title-winning lineups also selected for those worlds.

Many of the French will be looking to impress barely two years into their home games, including European bronze medalist Carole Cormenier, while other notable names in trap are former African champions Fowad Abid from Algeria, gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games in India Shreyasi SinghGreat Britain Lucy Hall who recently won silver in Cyprus, as well as the Finnish women’s team, all of whom will compete in Croatia.

Skeet shooters to watch at the 2022 World Shotgun Championship

The reigning Olympic champion Vincent Hancock leads the US skeet team. He has joined Dustan Taylor and Christian Eliot in the men’s team, while the US women’s team is there Dania Vizzi, Sam Simontonand AustenSmithwho displaced the five-time Olympic champion Kim Rhode for their three spots in Croatia.

Reigning world champion and Olympic silver medalist Marcus Svensson, as well as 2013 silver medalist and world champion Jesper Hansen from Denmark are among the participating medalists from Tokyo 2020.

Amber Mountain (pictured) will represent Great Britain, fresh from winning the European title in Larnaca. of France Eric Delaunay will be keen to improve on his fifth place finish at these Olympics. Italy’s starting list includes Andrea Benellithe 62-year-old technical director of the Italian skeet team, who won the gold medal in Athens in 2004 and has nine world titles to his credit.

Other notable names in skeet competition include India’s two-time Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan, Yerjanik Avetisyan from Armenia (women’s skeet), who has previously won three world titles representing Russia.

A contingent from the Middle East includes Qatar’s Olympic medalist and four-time Dakar Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiyahtwo-time Olympic medalist Abdullah Al-Rashidi of Kuwait, as well as five-time Olympic gold medalist and member of the UAE’s ruling family, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum.

The shooters will also try to make their mark in the new Olympic discipline, mixed team skeet, which debuts in Paris in 2024.

Qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 from the World Shotgun Championship 2022 in Osijek

At the ISSF World Championships Shotgun Osijek 2022, 16 Olympic quota places for Paris 2024 are up for grabs.

All will be awarded in individual finals: men’s trap, women’s trap (both finals on September 28), men’s skeet and women’s skeet (both finals on October 9).

  • TRAP Women = 4 quota places on offer.
  • SKEET men = 4 quota places on offer.
  • SKEET women = 4 quota places on offer.

These quota places are awarded to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) rather than to the individual athlete.

Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany have already secured trap quota places for Paris 2024 thanks to their performances at the Euro 2022.

Italy, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and Sweden claimed the offered skeet berths in Larnaca.
