Prince Harry arrives at the High Court on phone tapping and data protection charges

Prince Harry has arrived in London for the hearing of his lawsuit at the High Court Daily Mail Publisher Associated Newspapers on allegations of unlawful information gathering.

The publisher is launching a bid to end High Court claims brought by the likes of Harry, Sir Elton John and Baroness Doreen Lawrence over alleged unlawful activity on its titles.

The group, which also includes Sir Elton and actresses Liz Hurley and Sadie Frost, announced in October that it was filing claims against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over misappropriation of private information.

A statement released by the Hamlins law firm announcing the initiation of the lawsuit alleges the unlawful acts included hiring private investigators to covertly place listening devices in cars and homes, and recording private telephone conversations.

The publisher denied the allegations and described them as “absurd slander”.

The court case began with an offer by ANL’s attorneys to have certain reporting restrictions imposed on the case.

The Duke of Sussex sat at the back of the courtroom, occasionally making notes in a small black notebook while ANL’s solicitor Catrin Evans KC made legal arguments.

Actress Sadie Frost, who is also suing the publisher, was seated two seats away from Harry.

ICYMI: Prince Harry and Sir Elton John take legal action against Daily Mail publishers for ‘phone hacking’

As the preliminary hearing is set to begin, let’s take a look back to October when Prince Harry, among other high-profile figures, announced they were taking Associated Newspaper to court.

A group of people including Prince Harry and Sir Elton John have taken legal action against the publisher of the Daily Mail newspaper over phone hacking allegations.

The allegations include hiring individuals to “surreptitiously eavesdrop on and record private live phone conversations of individuals as they took place” and impersonating individuals to obtain medical information from private hospitals, clinics and treatment centers through deception.

Additional claims include access to bank accounts, credit histories, and financial transactions through unauthorized means and manipulation.

“These individuals have been objects of public interest throughout their careers and personal lives. They share the desire to live in a world in which the press acts freely but responsibly. A press that represents truth, is fact based and can be trusted to work ethically and in the interests of the British public,” the statement said.

Publisher brands allegations as “absurd slander”

A statement released by the Hamlins law firm announcing the initiation of the lawsuit alleges the unlawful acts included hiring private investigators to covertly place listening devices in cars and homes, and recording private telephone conversations.

The editor hit back at the allegations, describing them at the time as “absurd slanders” and a “pre-planned and orchestrated attempt to drag the Mail titles into the phone-hacking scandal.”

A spokesman for ANL also said the allegations were “baseless and highly defamatory allegations, based on no credible evidence”.

A four-day preliminary hearing begins Monday at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, which is expected to include ANL’s motion to dismiss the claims without trial.

The Duke of Sussex comes to court

The Duke of Sussex has arrived at the High Court in London to hear his complaint against the Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers, over allegations of unlawful information gathering.

The publisher is launching a bid to end High Court claims brought by the likes of Harry, Sir Elton John and Baroness Doreen Lawrence over alleged unlawful activity on its titles.

The group of high-profile individuals, including Sir Elton’s husband David Furnish and actresses Liz Hurley and Sadie Frost, announced in October that they were making claims against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over misappropriation of private information.

Their lawyers said at the time the group had “obtained compelling and extremely disturbing evidence that they were victims of heinous criminal activity and gross violations of privacy” from ANL, which is also the publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline.
