That’s no secret Prince William is an avid football fan but it seems the future king hasn’t always had it easy when it comes to the sport.

On Tuesday, the Duke of Cambridge took to social media to wish the footballer Jill Scott happiness in her retirement. At the end of his heartfelt message, he quipped, “A little bit pleased that there won’t be any more slide tackles on ‘friendly’ kickabouts…” leading fans to wonder what the King was talking about.

It turns out that Prince William and Jill Scott were playing soccer about 10 years ago and she attacked and “obliterated” the future king during a charity event.

Jill explained what had happened between her and the king: “It goes back about 10 years when we were doing a charity event and I slipped and slipped and actually obliterated him,” she said on her BBC podcast Jill Scott’s Coffee Club.

“The running joke whenever he saw us was ‘No yellow cards in this tournament, Jill,'” she added.

Jill even shared a snap of Will’s fall in 2012, captioning the post: “Seeing William at 30! When he is king, I will cherish this picture!”

The Duke has been a long-time supporter of the Lionesses, cheering for them and presenting them with their medals following their historic win over Germany in the final at Wembley last month.

William surprised fans at the game by hugging each member of the team.
