Win in the last game of the month before the start of the February international break. Real Madrid won 1-0 against Sporting Huelva in Madrid, with Caroline Møller’s late goal.
Alberto Toril put the team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, which turns into a 4-4-2 without the ball. The most obvious change is the goalkeeper. Méline Gérard gets to defend Madrid’s goal instead of Misa today. The back four are made up of Kenti and Olga as full-backs and Rocío and Kathellen as CBs. It’s the return of Zornoza-Weir-Toletti midfield after two-thirds of that combination sat on the bench in midweek play. Athenea and Feller are on wings while Esther leads the attack in the middle.
- The first half was both very exciting and boring. It was full of chances for Madrid that could have ended in goal.
- It all started in the 2′ minute when Weir crossed to Esther and her shot was blocked. This was the first chance of the game and it looked like Madrid would score soon. However, that was not the case at all.
- There were many dribbling actions from Athenea after which she failed to get a final pass. Then Esther also tried a few shots that usually stayed at the end. Weir took a few long shots and created a few chances as well.
- Sporting Huelva have a chance after 33 minutes after Rocío made a mistake in front of their box, but the shot went just wide. There was another action that could have been dangerous had Gérard not come out of the box for her sweeper-keeper moment, which she pinned. That happened in 36′.
- The first half ended with no goals from either side, and the second started without substitutions.
- The second half was filled with crosses, mostly from Olga. Sporting did a great job of closing the space every time Madrid tried a cross, a side pass or even a dribble. However, Las Blancas created significantly fewer chances than in the first half. The second half was quite repetitive, trying similar things and with just one substitution (Maite for Esther at 62′) getting the ball inside wasn’t easy. Since the substitution, the players in the penalty area have mainly been Weir and Maite, and the ball has always failed to arrive.
- In 86′ there was another replacement – Møller for Kenti.
- GOAL by Møller (1:0)! Toletti’s brilliant cross from the right landed perfectly in front of the Dane’s feet, who slotted the ball into the goal. The goalkeeper tried to save him, but her efforts were in vain.
- Alberto Toril made two more time-consuming substitutions. Sporting Huelva got a corner and tried to level, but their effort didn’t turn into anything dangerous.
- Another 90 minutes of suffering that ended in a late winner, this time also by a late sub. Off to the international break – a much-needed break after two games of constant suffering.
