As so often in monkey island Playing requires players to use voodoo magic as well as a special item hidden somewhere on Melee Island. However, in order to get their hands on it, they must first solve a few tricky puzzles and then consult with the Voodoo Lady to find a way to recover the identity of the item that hides the magic.

How to disguise Guybrush in Return to Monkey Island

If they haven’t done this before when building their own mop, players will need to get their hands on two monocle as well as a Carnivorous plant. The latter can be acquired by using the knife on one of the green plants in the Deep Dark Forest area where players carved their mop handle, while the monocles can be taken from the crate on Wally’s desk in the Low Street card shop. Players must exit and then re-enter the store after taking the first monocle for the second to appear.

Assuming players already have the above items, they should head to the Museum of Pirate Lore, which is located in the same area as the Deep Dark Forest entrance. Once inside, they should open their inventory and combine the two monocles and then use them Double monocle to read the tiny numbers above the display case’s lock. Next, they want to go through the door in the back right corner of the museum into the storage room and grab these cracker mix from the shelf on the left.

Players may need to speak to the locksmith before examining the tiny numbers on the display case or under the lock on the door of Otis’ prison cell.

At this point players should go back to the locksmith opposite the jail on the High Street and hand over the slip of paper with the serial number on it to obtain the Museum showcase key. You must also give the locksmith the cracker mix, after which she will allow Guybrush to help himself to the mix cracker on the plate under the parrot. With those two items now, it’s time to return to the museum and steal the main item needed for Guybrush’s cunning disguise.

Once at the museum, players should feed the parrot with a cracker and then use the key to quickly unlock and steal the display case eye patch. If they don’t feed the parrot a cracker, or take too long to open the case and take the patch afterwards, it will sound the alarm and alert the museum’s curator to Guybrush’s theft, forcing players to leave the museum and then to re-enter museum to reset the puzzle.

While at the museum, series fans may want to take a moment to examine some of the familiar items scattered around the grounds. This gives them a chance to recall some of Guybrush’s past adventures, with many references to the first two monkey island Games just waiting to be found. This is entirely optional, however, so those in a hurry can leave once they get their hands on the eyepatch if they wish.

Whenever ready, players should return to the dock area and then don the eyepatch while near LeChuck’s ship. Unfortunately, however, the eye patch does not appear to be working as intended, requiring players to take it to the Voodoo Lady in the High Street to have it repaired. She will ask for the bite of a thousand needles, at this point players should hand over the carnivorous plant they got from the deep dark forest to continue.

After a brief cutscene and an unconventional voodoo spell, the eyepatch is restored to its former glory, allowing Guybrush to assume a zombie-like appearance while wearing it. At this point, players can head back to the docks and put on the eye patch as before. However, unlike last time, Guybrush’s appearance will change completely, and if he shows the self-made mop to the Quartermaster, he will be hired immediately.

Those hoping to complete all of the smaller tasks on Guybrush’s TODO list should wait until they do so before returning to the Quartermaster, as hiring as Schwabbie will immediately bring about the end of Part 1. When players next gain control of the mighty pirate, the ship will already have set sail from Melee Island, which brings Part 2 with it Return to Monkey IslandA dangerous journey.

Return to Monkey Island is now available for PC and Nintendo Switch.
