Rice Jones Is Latest Top U.S. B-School To Add A 4th MBA Application Round
The Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University in Houston, Texas, is adding a fourth round of MBA applications for North American applicants with an early May deadline
The challenges and complexities of life in the not-quite-post-Covid United States have prompted another leading business school to make arrangements for those who are considering — but perhaps not yet ready — to pursue an MBA degree to apply.
The Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University announced in an email admissions newsletter that it will add a fourth round for full-time MBA applicants from Canada, Mexico, or the United States “who need a little more time ‘ to complete their essays and other app components. The round is open to US citizens, US permanent residents or current residents of North America and ends May 1 at 12:00 pm CST.
Rice Jones joins more than a dozen top schools that have waived entrance exams, extended application deadlines, offered scholarship funds, or otherwise changed their admissions calendar and processes — most of them declaring their intention to target hordes of recently laid-off techs and other workers in an economy that has been showing signs of slipping into recession for months. It is the fourth leading US school to introduce an all-new round of applications, following Duke Fuqua, Michigan Ross and Texas-Austin McCombs.
RICE 2022 TECHNICAL PLACEMENT INCREASED BY NEARLY 50%
True Up, a website that tracks layoffs and vacancies in the tech sector, reports that so far in 2023 there have been 663 layoffs at tech companies, affecting 184,660 people, an average of 2,337 people per day. The latest mass layoff was at Amazon, which announced on March 20 that it was laying off 9,000 companies. In 2022, there were 1,535 layoffs at tech companies, affecting 241,176 people.
Rice’s move to add a fourth round of applications isn’t specifically linked to an attempt to lure to Houston the masses of suddenly unemployed technicians, of whom the March 16 newsletter makes no mention.
Still, tech workers looking to go back to school might find a worse landing spot, as tech job placement is something Rice is known for: In its MBA Class of 2022 Employment Report, the school reported that just over a fifth of the class found work in the industry, almost 50% more than last year.
‘WE GIVE YOU COVER’
“The past three years have brought new challenges and opportunities to the business community,” the school announced in its March 16 admissions newsletter, citing “unprecedented events” that have “forced many young professionals to adjust their schedules and weigh their options.” “.
Rice is also not looking to increase overall applications, the school explains, which have increased by more than 13% over the past two app cycles.
“We get it, and we’ve got you covered,” the school says. “While we’re seeing an increase in applications, we understand if you need more time to decide on next steps.”
Decisions on MBA applications made by Rice Jones’ fourth-round deadline of May 1 will be made on an ongoing basis and “on the basis of available places,” the school announced. Meanwhile, the school’s third-round app deadline remains March 31 at 12 p.m. CST, with decisions to be announced by May 10.
