Rooney, News Corp among winners at Media Awards
Quinn Rooney and the News Corp team were among the winners Night Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Media Awards, held at the MCG.
The News Corp team received the award for Best Coverage of a Sporting Event after its coverage of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, one of four awards the team won over the course of the night.
Coverage included the development of its own newsroom, which delivered a range of engaging content to 11.8 million people throughout the duration of the Games.
Quinn Rooney received the award for Best Sports Photography for his incredible image ‘Diving for Gold’ in which Emma McKeown jumps into the water in the 200m in Birmingham.
Channel 7 veteran reporter Matt Carmichael was recognized for Best Coverage of Sport for People with Disabilities, which included his coverage on the ground in Birmingham.
At other awards, ABC host and award-winning journalist Tracey Holmes was announced as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
She has been involved in journalism and communications for more than 30 years, having started her career in 1989 at the national broadcaster where she hosted Grandstand before presenting radio and television programs around the world.
Holmes has broadcast 14 Olympic Games and is considered one of Australia’s most influential sports broadcasters.
Sports Minister The Hon Anika Wells presented ABC’s Zoe Keenan and Dinushi Dias with the award for Best Coverage of a Community Sports Issue – Rural and Regional Media southwest WA for her investigation into racism and sexism at South Bunbury Football Club.
That evening, media professionals and organizations from across Australia were recognized for their coverage of sport, with awards for profiles, broadcasting, inclusive sport, community sport issues and more.
