Ruben Amorim talks future amid reports he could join Tottenham as manager
Ruben Amorim has told CM Journal that he is focused on staying at Sporting Lisbon until the end of his contract in the summer of 2026 – amid reports Tottenham could be looking to land the talented gaffer to replace Antonio Conte.
Conte and Spurs reacted after a dismal week that saw them eliminated from the FA Cup and Champions League at the weekend. A solid 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, despite a late Forest goal – and Fraser Forster saved a penalty.
But now Conte is expected to leave Spurs. His contract ends in the summer. Mail+ reports that the Spurs board has no intention of triggering the 12-month renewal clause that remains in his contract. So who gets to replace the Italian?
The Athletic claim gaffer Amorim, 38, who has faced Tottenham twice with Sporting this season in the Champions League, is hugely popular with Fabio Paratici. Amorim has commented on his future as he faced the Spurs takeover.
“I have a contract with Sporting for another three years and in my mind I have the vision of being champions at least once more in those three years,” Amorim told CM Journal over the weekend when asked about taking over at Spurs could.
Ruben Amorim remains focused on Sporting amid Tottenham reports
Amorim would be an excellent appointment. A manager who has given Sporting a real identity and has caused trouble for both north London sides this season – beating Spurs at home and playing away. A 2-2 draw against Arsenal last week.
Four awards to date, including a league title, he has won 101 of his 146 games as a sporting manager. It’s unclear if Spurs will seek a move, with a compensation package likely to be expensive given his contract end in June 2026.
Spurs have also been linked to the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva, Ange Postecoglou and Luis Enrique. However, Conte is likely to remain at Spurs until the end of the season before a decision is announced.
