According to all the viral reels and TikTok’s of the manicure, it pays special attention to cuticle prep. You start by using a special tool to push back the cuticles and give them more surface. Then, you also use an e-filing — a specialised electric drill to even out the nail surface.
The next step is using specialised scissors to trim the cuticles to get a clean look. Nail technicians usually add extensions or trim the nails using a filer according to the client’s nails and personal preferences.
Finally, you can include various nail primers and base coats before adding the nail colour and design. The key difference between a regular manicure and a Russian manicure is the time that it lasts. A Russian manicure typically lasts a week or two longer than regular manicured nails.
So, what is the controversy surrounding Russian manicures?
According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, cutting too close to the cuticles can increase the chances of infection, and “when you or your nail technician cuts (or pushes back) your cuticles, this can lead to a serious infection.”
Although many nail technicians are well trained and specialise in what they do, it is still important to consider what the dermatologists have stated about the dangers of cutting or pushing back cuticles before you book your Russian manicure.
In case you are planning to get a Russian manicure or your usual manicure, here is some trendy nail art inspiration:
The abstract tips
The abstract tips nail trend has been going around for quite a while now. It is a twist on the classic ‘French Manicure.’ Instead of the classic white tips of the French manicure, people online have been getting creative by using abstract designs and colours on the tip. In this particular post, the nail artist uses the famous Emilio Pucci Print which plays with kaleidoscopic colours and geometric patterns.
The classy nails
Ever since the mainstream popularity of the ‘old money‘ aesthetic (thanks to the rebrand of Sophia Richie!), more and more people are opting for classy and chic nails. These are often short and practical. A lot of people associate these nails with nudes or soft shades like pink. In the Instagram post by @kimkimnails, nail artist for many famous celebrities like Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian, she did ‘Milky White’ nails for Kourtney Kardashian. These nails perfectly embody the classy ‘old-money’ look.
The Barbie nails
Since the Barbie movie came out, many people have been all about getting the Barbiecore aesthetic, including the Barbie pink nails. While some people get different shades of pink for their nails, others opt for pink tips. Many even posted their Barbie logo nails on social media to celebrate the movie’s release.
