HANFORD, Calif. — Two-time NARC title holder Dominic Scelzi continued his dominance at Saturday night’s Peter Murphy Classic finale by recording his third straight win in the $11,000 sprint car at Kings Speedway.
The winning vehicle in this NAPA Auto Parts 30-lap feature was the Jimmy Carr-worn Scelzi Enterprise/Whipple Superchargers/Red Rose Transportation No. 41 Maxim.
Scelzi, who won the hard-fought pole shuffle, took an early lead but was wiped out by warning flags early on. Chasing from the start, Shane Golobic went neck and neck with the leader for several laps before taking the lead on lap five. Golobic, in the Works Limited NO. 57 EMI, and Scelzi slipped back and forth for several laps before Scelzi went past the flagpole and secured the point on the seventh time. Golobic led in rounds five and six.
Scelzi soon had his hands full navigating the lap traffic but made the right moves to navigate around and between slower cars. Golobic fought hard for the point again at the restart on lap 13 but failed to follow through on anything. Scelzi mastered the remaining distance over the three-eighth mile oval and secured his second win of the season with a whopping 4.7 seconds advantage.
“That used to be a race that plagued me,” Scelzi said in the win streak after earning his 21st career NARC win.
“I broke my back in his race in 2015 and then in 2021 we couldn’t lose and in 2022 we were strong. Last night I felt like I knew what it would take to get a little bit better, but I really didn’t know what it would take to win. Corey (Day) is so talented and so hard to beat, he’s just getting better and he’s got such a talented group of riders behind him. Still, this old fella isn’t done yet.”
Day finished his weekend second in the Jason Meyers Racing fielded Meyers Constructors/Four C’s Construction No. 14 KPC, followed by Toyota Racing Development/Roth Motorsports/HR Livestock No. 83 Maxim driven by James McFadden.
Justin Sanders brought Demo Mittry’s Farmer’s Brewing/North County Plastering #2x Maxim to fourth place. Golobic completed the top five.
“The loss to Dominic says a lot and this race means a lot to him,” Day said. “For me, the momentum of the race didn’t develop the way I needed it to.” I wasted too much time early in the race and the seventh start wasn’t ideal for us. I knew Dominic would be good up front. He came to the 360 and I knew that Jimmy (Carr, crew chief) would do well with his car.”
