Schultz Report: The latest rumors and news ahead of NFL free agency
Alessio DelGobbo / theScore
NFL Free Agency is just around the corner and Jordan Schultz, NFL insider from Thescore, has the latest rumors from all over the league.
6th March
11 a.m. ET: According to league sources around LineBacker Bobby Okereke, the bears should be in the mix (more about Okereke in our update on March 1st). And two other names that you should keep in mind: Safety Marcus Epps, which is in the upward trend, and Cornerback Jonathan Jones, who is a sleeper in the free hand.
4th of March
4 p.m. ET: Baker Mayfield and the 49ers will have a common interest if the former No. 1 of the overall selection comes to the Free-Agent market. San Francisco could be on the market for a veteran backup because Brock Purdy recovers from an elbow operation. League sources assume that the Mayfield market will reach around $ 8 million a year.
2nd March
1:50 p.m. ET: The Jaguars will use the franchise day at the narrow end of Evan Engram. Keeping the 28-year-old was a great priority for the Jags who entered this low season. Engram developed into one of Trevor Lawrence’s favorite goals and registered a 73/766/4 line. While the day is $ 11.3 million for just under end, the two sides have until July 17 to complete a long-term deal.
1st March
4:39 p.m. ET: Baker Mayfield should have a good free agent market. He was very popular with the RAMs staff and players. He may have to be a backup in 2023, but I think he will have the chance to start again – whether in the next season or 2024.
1:56 p.m. ET: League sources assume that the Colts linackers Bobby Okereke and EJ Speed will be very popular if they enter the freely. Both shone in extended roles, with Shaquille Leonard injured for a large part of 2022. Okereke made 151 Tackles, six tackles for losses, five passport separations and two forced fumbling. Speed made 63 tackles with seven tackles for losses, two pass broken offs and two forced fumbling. Every player could find a bigger role elsewhere.
9:22 am ET: The Texans try to find a new home for Brandin Cooks via a trade. After a turbulent season in which Cooks was apparently disappointed that he was not exchanged on the cut-off date and then missed several games, the 29-year-old wants to play for a winner.
February 28th
8:31 p.m. ET: The Bills and Rams are two teams looking for more running back depth at hand. It’s a loaded class, led by franchise tag nominees Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard. Upcoming free-agent running backs include Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt, Alexander Mattison and David Montgomery.
9:22 pm et: Several people in the Eagles building believe Kenneth Gainwell is a Pro Bowl player who needs more touches. Miles Sanders had a great year, led the Eagles with 1,269 rushing yards and added 11 touchdowns after not scoring a goal in 2021, but can Philly afford it?
8:12 p.m. ET: Mike Gesicki will not be back in Miami. The market is developing well for the 27-year-old Tight End, and it should either conclude a multi-year contract or maybe a nice one-year contract elsewhere before it is really paid in the next low season. Many teams are interested in Sichi, despite a somewhat bad season in which he never seemed to harmonize with Mike McDaniel’s offensive approach.
6:57 p.m. ET: The Seahawks love Geno Smith as a player and as a person and want him to be with them long term. Smith has a great relationship with Pete Carroll and the coaching staff. The dressing room loves him too. Whether it is about the franchise day or a long-term contract, Smith will be back in Seattle and have the chance to build up in his career in 2022 on his best 4,282 Passing Yards and 30 touchdowns.
