See Prince William & Kate Middleton Cheer on Opposing Teams in Sporting Match in Photos
Prince William and Kate are so often side by side, working as a team and cheering each other on. But today the royal couple were side by side but cheering for the opposing sides as they took part in a rugby match between Wales and England.
The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium to watch the two teams play in the Six Nations Championship. But as patron of Welsh rugby union, William has championed Wales while his wife was there to support England in her position as patron of English rugby football union. However, the pair were still coordinated in their outfits, with William’s black coat and red Wales scarf matching Kate’s red and white houndstooth jacket and black turtleneck. At half-time, the couple’s official Twitter account posted in English and Welsh: “What a great rugby half! Up in the next 40 minutes.”
Ahead of the game, the Royals met with injured players supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust before opening a new space at the stadium dedicated to them. All injured players are invited to every home game in Wales and each year the WRU hosts a family day where the group can spend time with their families.
More from town & country
Kate became patron of the RFU in February 2022, succeeding Prince Harry, who gave up the role when he stepped down from royal duties. A few weeks ago she hosted a reception for the English Wheelchair Rugby League team in recognition of their success in becoming champions at the Rugby League World Cup. As Kate congratulated them, she shared how she cheered them on as she watched on TV with her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Prince William became Patron of Welsh Rugby Union in December 2016 after Queen Elizabeth turned 90 and handed over the patronage. He had previously been Vice Patron since 2007.
William and Kate have further engagements in Wales this week ahead of St David’s Day on March 1st. On Tuesday, they will visit South Wales to advocate for mental health initiatives and meet local communities. King Charles made the couple Prince and Princess of Wales upon his accession to the throne in September. While Charles had a formal investiture as Prince of Wales, Kensington Palace said there were “no plans” for William to do the same.
