Six Nations LIVE: Wales vs England score and updates from Cardiff

Six Nations week one recap: England struggle while Ireland make statement

Wales meet England in a crucial Six Nations tie after the most turbulent week.

Cardiff’s roar will be key as the Red Rose come to Principality Stadium to bring even more misery to Warren Gatland and the Welsh rugby crisis.

The goal was saved at the last minute and Gatland need to bring some joy to the pitch after a big defeat by Scotland last time out.

England are up and running under Steve Borthwick after beating Italy at Twickenham but this hostile atmosphere could yet reveal the character of a work in progress.

Wales 10-15 England, 55 minutes

Changes on both sides, and then come the two players we tagged at half-time. Mako Vunipola’s extended warm-up served to set up support for Ellis Genge while Dan Biggar replaced Owen Williams.

Also in for Wales is Nick Tompkins, whose debut Mason Grady has made. Solid enough from the middle who you think should have a lot more options in a Welsh jersey.

Wales 10-15 England, 55 minutes

Two Welshmen are treated briefly, Owen Williams one of them after a firm landing on Anthony Watson after the two fought in the air.

Again, both groups of players turned their eyes to the Cardiff sky and Wales knocked near the touchline.

Wales 10-15 England, 53 minutes

Another free-kick against England in the scrum as both front rows struggle to line up. England certainly takes the resulting lift to the skies.

That less! Anthony Watson misinterprets the flight and Jack van Poortvliet has to fall on the loose ball.

Wales 10-15 England, 51 minutes

Jack van Poortvliet’s box flattens slightly but good work from the chasers means it’s back in English hands. Ollie Chessum is repelled but Christ Tshiunza had knocked out during the air contest.

Here’s Kyle Sinckler’s score – it was given on the pitch, so Mathieu Raynal must have spotted an earth touch, although one isn’t entirely obvious:

Wales 10-15 England, 47 minutes

Neither side was really at the top in the scrum today, but it was still pretty chaotic throughout. After a reset, Mathieu Raynal pauses between each instruction to provide some stability and England can’t resist driving early.

Wales tap and scout left edge but Leigh Halfpenny is treated and England receive a breakdown penalty.

Wales 10-15 England, 47 minutes

Wales work stages midway, Mason Grady wins a collision but to little final win. Tomos Williams drops the ball on his right toe and box lifts behind Anthony Watson, who hits a chasing Louis Rees-Zammit with a deft swing towards the touchline.

England threaten tram lines but Ollie Lawrence’s offload drifts forward. Wales scrum at the ten meter line.

ATTEMPT! Wales 10-15 ENGLAND (Kyle Sinckler try, 45 mins)

England answers! A penalty from the restart and they can attack immediately within the Welsh 22. The visitors rely on their forwards and Kyle Sinckler delivers, smuggling the ball to the ground just before he tumbles over the line with the muscular support of a mate.

Owen Farrell converted – just as Steve Borthwick would have wanted his team to respond to that gentle concession of the try.

ATTEMPT! WALES 10-8 England (Louis Rees-Zammit attempt, 41 minutes)

Intercepted! They don’t catch Louis Rees-Zammit!

A scare for Max Malins, fatally double recoupling. The wing stops before it gets past the line and waits to pull the trigger until Rees-Zammit is right there to catch it.

He records cleanly, and from there the conclusion is withheld. The change puts Wales in the first lead of the evening.

H/T: Wales 3-8 England

Interestingly, Mako Vunipola completes an extended early warm-up for England at half-time, with all of Wales’ substitutes traveling with him on the principality’s surface. Vunipola will soon be backed by his English banking buddies – Steve Borthwick stressed this week how disappointed he was at England’s conceding to Italy in the last quarter, so their involvement could be crucial.

However, Wales have a lot of quality among their substitutes – you think this could be the kind of day for Dan Biggar…
