Splatoon 3 multiplayer guide: How to play matches with friends
One of the biggest advantages of Splatoon 3 is its online aspect. You can always start matches online with random players, but it’s more fun when you can jump stages with friends. There are multiple ways to play together, from simply joining a friend’s game to making space just for you and your friends. If you have multiple friends who want to play, there’s even a private battle mode that allows up to 10 players.

Splatoon 3: How to Set Your Nintendo Switch Status to Online
Splatoon 3 is one of the best Switch multiplayer games to play with friends, but first you need to let them know you’re ready to play. First, make sure your Switch Online viewing status is set up for friends to see. That way, they can see if you’re online and jump into matches with you.
- Click yours profile pic in the top-left corner of the Switch main menu.
- Choose user settings.
- Scroll down and click friends settings.
- Make sure, that Show online status too Section is listed as All friends or Best friends.
While playing Splatoon 3, you can see which of your friends are online by looking at the main menu or by bumping into their avatar in the lobby. This also helps you see if they are free for a new game or in the middle of a round.
Splatoon 3: How to create a room
Creating a room will group everyone in that room and compete in the same games as a team. Between two and four players can be in a room. Here’s how to set one up.
- Go to Menu by pressing X button.
- Choose Lobby.
- Press the L button to bring up match menu.

Once the game has set up the round, you will all be put into a stage together to face off against another team.
Splatoon 3: How to join a friend’s game
Instead of creating formal space, you can also just join a game with another online friend if they’re already in a match. More than four friends can play together using this method. Just be aware that by doing this you only guarantee that you are in the game, not that you are on the same page. If a friend is not currently in a match or about to join a match, you will not be able to join them.
- Go to Menu by pressing X button.
- Choose Lobby.

- A list of your friends will appear. Select the available friends who you want to play with.

You’ll have to wait for the session to set up, but once everything’s ready, you’ll be playing on the same stage as your friend. Work together or against each other to paint the city red (or whatever color you get).

Splatoon 3 is immeasurably better for playing with friends. There are many ways to jump into matches with people of your choosing, rather than just jumping into stages with random players. If you have one to three other people you want to play with on the same team, consider creating a room where you can all play on the same side.
If you’re just looking for a way to quickly connect with others, you can find a friend’s name on the list and dive into their match, but you might not be on the same page. However, if you have multiple friends who want to play, consider setting up Private Battle mode. Up to 10 people can participate.
