Sport Management students land on top of Global BSG Scoreboard | News, Sports, Jobs

LOCK HAVEN – A team of sports management students at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven landed at the top of the global online simulation game The Business Strategy Game (BSG).

The simulation game allows students of Dr. Peter Campbell’s graduate level financial management in physical education class to connect with others around the world to see who’s the best.

BSG consists of teams of one to five students who lead and operate an athletic footwear company in head-to-head competition with other members of the class – with the potential to earn a spot on a global scoreboard.

Dallas Shoe Company, a team comprised of Lock Haven grad students Dallas Kurtz; Andrew Klose from Elizabethtown; and Lacey Snyder of Herndon finished the simulation not only at the top of the class competition scoreboard, but also at the top of the global scoreboard. The team earned a spot on the BSG platform’s global scoreboard for three consecutive weeks during the simulation.

For the last week, the Dallas Shoe Company simulation team achieved a global top 100 ranking based on the following performance criteria. The group finished the simulation with an overall score of 110.0, earning them the best overall score in the world; its earnings per share were $44.90, the second best in the world; and its stock price was $1,001.76, which was the fourth best in the world.

“The BSG simulation allows students to compete as a team and put concepts learned in class into practice against other graduate students locally and at universities around the world,” said Campbell. “I am proud of the achievement of all the students in the class, but the achievements of the Dallas Shoe Company members underscore the quality of education received in the graduate program in sports management.”

“Our strategy from the beginning of the game was to open and continue to improve our facilities in all four regions included in the simulation,” said Kurtz.

The BSG simulation aims to show students, on a smaller scale, what it’s like to run a sports-related business on a global scale and to put their sports financial management skills to the test.

“The simulation was a great experience that gave me the opportunity to look at all the small decisions that need to be made to run a large company,” said Kurtz.

“The Sports Management program at Lock Haven offers students a great opportunity to learn in the classroom and through hands-on experiences,” he added. “The professors involved in the program care about the success of each individual student and continue to provide real opportunities to the students.”
